LGBTQ+ Well-Being: How to Take Care Of Your Body Through Stressful Times

Stress is inevitable –– but for members of the LGBTQ+ community, stress can build from the unique challenges of navigating identity, bias, and belonging. Whether it’s the pressure of coming out, managing family dynamics, enduring microaggressions, or absorbing the stress of the ongoing news cycle, the weight of it can take a toll. 

In honor of Pride Month, we’re exploring small ways to reduce stress and take care of your mental and physical health. Use Pride celebrations as a reminder to nourish your body and set boundaries for your wellbeing. Here are a few Microsteps to try:

Invite a friend over for dinner when you’re having a hard day.
It’s tempting to isolate yourself during stressful times, but having a friend come over and share a meal with you can encourage you to nourish your body and find support and connection.

Check in with yourself each morning before reaching for your phone.
Between the fast-paced news cycle and other stressors in our lives, taking time to check in is important. Ask yourself, “How am I really feeling today?” 

Follow one new LGBTQ+ creator or mental health advocate on social media.
Doing a mini “feed audit” allows you to see content that makes you feel seen and heard, instead of less-than.

Set a reminder on your phone for a movement break.
Exercise isn’t always top of mind during stressful times, but taking some time to do a form of exercise that makes you feel good can help you feel more calm.

Create a “chosen family” contact list on your phone.
Jot down a list of people you can call when you need support when things feel difficult. 

Write down one thing that makes you smile or laugh today — even if it’s tiny.
You’ll start noticing the small joys in your day and train yourself to look for positivity in everyday moments.

Carve out time to prepare snack or lunch options for the week.
Meal prep is a simple form of self-care — it ensures you have nourishing options ready when you're too busy, don’t feel like cooking, or don’t have a big appetite due to stress.

Choose one go-to recharge strategy for days when you feel overwhelmed.
It can be deep breathing, taking a walk outside, or repeating an affirmation that resonates –– like, “I will get through this.” 

Give yourself permission to skip the news for a day.
It’s okay to take a break. Turning off the TV, radio, or news podcasts—even for a single day—can give your mind space to reset and help you reconnect with the present moment.
