How Heather Watkins Started Finding Joy In Meditation

The Vaccine Research and Analytics Scientist at Takeda says carving out five minutes to find a moment of mindfulness has helped boost her creativity and curiosity.

I try to set aside at least five minutes to meditate each day using the Calm app. There are some days where this is not possible, but I really try to prioritize it because I feel so much more grounded during the day after I take this time for myself. Getting away from my computer or phone screen is also really important to me.

I first started meditating about a year ago, just out of curiosity. I had tried meditation in the past but it felt more like a chore than something that I looked forward to and enjoyed. The Calm app was a game-changer for me because the content is always new, so you don't have to listen to the same meditations over and over again, which can become tiring. It took consistency to see the benefits from my meditation practice other than just feeling calmer. However, I really feel that it has made a positive impact on my life in terms of my creativity, problem-solving, and ability to experience joy in the little things. It has helped me stay present in the moment.

I also love cooking, so I have started using cookbooks instead of looking up recipes online while I am cooking. This helps to give my eyes a break from my screen and it is also a nice way to be more present while I am in the kitchen. I’ve really enjoyed the Nourish to Thrive course in the Thrive app. Watching the short lessons taught me the importance of fiber in brain health and how it can help reduce inflammation in the body. It has changed the way I think about healthy eating and it is really interesting material for a food-obsessed person like me!

I recently moved and there are a lot of adorable dogs in my new neighborhood. When commuting into work, I enjoy seeing all of the different dogs out for their morning walks and it brings me joy before starting my day. It’s a nice mindful moment, and it helps bring me perspective. If I could give my younger self one piece of advice, I’d tell her to focus on progress over perfection. And sometimes, the only way out is through.
