The Chief of Staff, Coaching & Training Operations, shares the Microsteps that help her make time for what’s important.
Right now, I’m working on my Focus journey. One Microstep that has been really helpful for me is, “Observe your breathing when you open up your email in the morning.” Simply noticing my breathing helps me set the tone for the rest of my day, and keeps the day’s stressors in perspective. I have several commitments that are as important to me as they are for my loved ones, including a daily walk for my dogs and a CrossFit class with my partner. On busy days, it can be easy to deprioritize myself, but I try my best to show up for these events because of my built in accountability buddies. And when I do, I always leave clear-minded and extra grateful for the time we shared together.
Movement is one daily practice that has had a big influence on my mental health and well-being. It gets me out of my head and helps me feel accomplished when other elements of my life feel uncontrollable. Ever since I made exercise part of my daily routine, it doesn’t feel like a chore anymore. It’s something I look forward to every day, and it’s improved my focus and productivity.
I tend to be more of a night owl, so I struggle with getting enough sleep. I also tend to doom scroll and worry more at night. I'm working on removing my phone from my bedroom and picking up a book instead. Some of my best friends from college and I started a virtual book club 5 years ago and it’s been a great way to keep in touch and explore new genres. I always look forward to our calls and taking that time to connect when we don’t see each other as often as we used to. It’s also been helpful in building my habit of reading rather than scrolling before bed. I’ve got to be sure I’m ready to discuss the book ahead of our next call! And when I do feel worried or stressed, I try to think about the things that bring me joy: my family and loved ones, my pups, the mountains, sweating, curling up with a good book, exploring new places and cultures, and Sunday morning crosswords with my coffee. I also love to watch my favorite Thrive Reset, “Rolling Rivers,” when I feel overwhelmed. It can help me recharge in just a minute, and it’s so helpful for my overall well-being.
