Culture Leader at Microsoft explains how meditation, mindfulness, and deep breathing help her stay calm and positive.
For the past decade I’ve been spending time learning to be more mindful, and I’ve discovered along the way that mindfulness involves constant awareness. I was motivated to embark on my well-being journey by my deeply held desire to be better, more inclusive, more present, and more true to myself. My goal is literally to rest in myself.
I’ve moved from thinking I need to spend at least 10 minutes a day meditating, to an understanding that for me, meditation is more about a state of mind than an actual activity.
I use my learnings on a daily basis to stay calm. Thrive Global Microsteps help me build on my good, sustainable habits. One Microstep that supports my mental health is doing deep breathing which helps me ground myself. Specifically, I do my best to be present when I am with other people, to silence my inner, critical voice, and generally to foster a positive mindset. I find that the Thrive courses and articles support and inspire me, so I know that I’m on the right path.
Throughout this process, my motivation is to continually work on coming home to myself and resting in the “now.” These are hard skills, not only to learn, but to maintain during a hectic workday and in life in general. I don’t always succeed; however, what I have learned so far is that there is always an opportunity to try again. Coming back to my breath saves me every time — it is that simple: Just breathe.
I hope my journey inspires others to explore their own paths towards mental well-being. My advice and encouragement: Every step you take, no matter how small, is progress. Let’s continue to support each other in fostering a mindful and joyful life.
