About 40 million steroid prescriptions are written each year in the United States.

These are not the same steroids that you hear about bodybuilders taking. Those are anabolic; these are corticosteroids.

While these prescriptions are highly effective at reducing inflammation, they’re most often associated with the undesirable side effect of weight gain.

Read this guide to learn about steroids and weight gain before you start taking your newly prescribed medication.

Why Does Weight Gain Happen?

The reason so many people gain weight is that the steroids change the natural balance of electrolytes and water. They also alter the metabolism. This changes the way your body processes protein, amino acids, lipids, glucose, and carbohydrates.

These changes cause weight gain by increasing your appetite, fluid retention, and fat stores.

Steroids and Weight Gain Prevention

Start by talking to your doctor about your medication options. You may find that by using alternative sources like this online source, you have more options for medications.

Your doctor can work with you to try a different dosage schedule or form of the steroid. Never make changes or quit taking your medication without the supervision of your doctor.

Food Choices

You can change up the way you eat to include more belly-filling, yet low-calorie fruits and veggies. Then break down your meals to have 5-6 instead of 3 a day. This will keep food in your stomach throughout the entire day.

Having more meals will also keep your metabolism engaged. Eating less causes your metabolism to slow down, which means you burn fewer calories.

Choose fiber-rich and complex carbohydrates. These foods take longer to digest and will keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Make sure that every meal has some protein. This could be meat, cheese, or legumes. Including protein helps curb your appetite and control your weight.

Finally, stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Often, when people think they’re hungry, they’re actually thirsty.

Lifestyle Changes

It’s a simple fact that if you want to maintain or lose weight, then you need to burn more calories than you take in. So, you need to stay active!

This can be hard if you don’t feel well already.

Try having a workout buddy to help you stay motivated by holding you accountable.

Losing the Gained Weight

The good news is that your weight gain is not permanent. Once you stop taking the medication, your body will begin to readjust back to its normal levels and processes.

Once this happens, you’ll start to see the weigh gained come off. This isn’t a fast process, though.

Expect to see slow changes in the six months to a year following the stopping of your steroids.

Take Control of Your Health

Knowing how steroids and weight gain relate to each other can help you prevent and address this possible side effect.

Remember, you may not be able to prevent weight gain totally, but you can definitely limit its effects. This will help you become a healthier and happier person.
