Americans were already among the most stressed-out people in the world — even before the coronavirus pandemic. With what’s been going on in the world lately due to the COVID-19 outbreak, a lot of us are feeling even more on edge. You could be feeling:

  • The fear of catching or spreading an infectious disease
  • Pressure to protect your families and loved ones
  • Worry over job insecurity and global economic impact
  • Loneliness and other effects of social isolation
  • Dread and uncertainty over what the future holds

Unfortunately, higher levels of stress have been proven to wreak havoc with the body’s ability to regulate inflammation, making us more susceptible to physical illness.

Feelings of negativity, pessimism, worry, and despair can increase our stress levels and corrode our sense of well-being. They can also rob us of the joy we deserve and the hope we need to make it through trying times such as these.

This is one reason we need to do things to cultivate feelings of calm positivity and hopefulness, especially when we face a personal or collective crisis.

If you are struggling with negative emotions at this time, you are not alone. The good news is there are things you can do to boost your mindset and give you greater confidence to face the challenges in your life. Here are a few:

1. Positive Affirmations — Simply taking a few minutes with positive affirmations every morning can drastically improve how things go for you. It’s like giving yourself a quick pep talk in the mirror. Even if it feels a little silly, look at yourself and say, “It’s going to be a great / happy / productive day.” You can then get more specific and tell yourself how you’re going to perform the specific things you want to get done. This will help you accomplish your goals — and even small accomplishments day by day can do a lot to boost your mood.

2. Focus on the Good — Most days, there will be obstacles to overcome, people who are hard to deal with, and mistakes made. But when you run into these things, find a sliver of good and consciously choose to dwell on that instead of what went wrong. This can help you maintain the positive mindset you need to enable your own achievement.

3. Meditate — Meditation can help you clear negativity, energize your mind, and relieve anxiousness. Think of it as hitting the reset button — allowing yourself a moment to disconnect from the world and tune out the negative. While you’re meditating, focus on light, positivity, and gratitude.

4. Release Trapped Emotions — Our thoughts and emotions can create physical energy in our bodies. Left unprocessed, these energies may remain in our bodies, potentially leading to imbalance and physical and/or mental distress. At Discover Healing, we call these energies Trapped Emotions.
