Katrina Scott and Karena Dawn know a thing or two about goal-setting. As the founders of Tone It Up, Karena and Katrina have built a community for millions of women, where they share everything from healthy recipes to pregnancy advice. While Tone It Up is the title of their fitness empire, “toning up” is just one small part of it.

With so much conflicting advice out there, it can be difficult to truly understand what your body needs to stay healthy. Karena and Katrina focus on one thing that people often overlook when it comes to getting healthy: prioritizing happiness. After all, “toning up” is much more fun when good conversation, new friendships, and healthy mindsets are in the mix.

As we approach the new year, the Tone it Up girls have smart advice to help us ditch the traditional concept of strict resolutions (that almost inevitably fail). They share their top tips to help spark joy and create genuine change.

Start small and attainable

Katrina Scott: For me, it’s all about starting with attainable, short-term goals. One goal that’s been amazing for me is skipping fried food for the month of January. Once the month is up, you’ll be feeling so great you may just keep at it! As someone who loves fried appetizers and sweet potato fries, I promise it’s totally doable, and will help motivate you to make more healthy choices!

Share your goals

Karena Dawn: Sharing your goal or intention is just as important as setting it. You’ll be more likely to follow through if you’ve jotted it down or voiced it to someone special in your life — or the whole #TIUteam! It may seem intimidating or scary to post your personal goals on social media, but trust us, this community is here to cheer you on, celebrate your successes, and help stick to your workouts in the TIU app!

Plan ahead

KD: During this busy time of year, planning my workouts ahead of time is more important than ever! Look at your calendar and schedule yourself for success. If you have a big event coming up, squeeze in an extra workout that week. Have friends in town? Scout the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan for healthy meals to cook with them.

Don’t stress if you slip up

KS: Life happens! If you miss a workout or indulge a little more than you planned, remember to show yourself grace. As a new mom, I’m learning this more and more every day! Don’t stress — you can get back to your goals the next day, or at your next meal. What defines us is not how we fall, but how we get back up. And the entire Tone It Up community is here to support you every step of the way.
