Men and women who perform energy work see spiritual grounding as the attempt to connect to the earth in various ways to bring mental and physical balance, which leads to spiritual well-being. If you have never performed any type of energy work, you might be surprised at how effective it can be. These are not mystical theories that can only be understood by people who study the metaphysical. Rather, the principle of spiritual grounding possesses very real scientific and psychological principles.

How Grounding is Performed
Grounding, also known as earthing, is an attempt to get the bodies we inhabit as spiritual beings to connect with the heart. It can be seen as a form of meditation, but it’s more than that. It balances out a human being’s field of energy, known as the aura, and keeps negative energies from entering this field and corrupting thoughts, and eventually affecting the kinds of actions we take.

Meditation, visualization, and chanting are sometimes performed during a grounding ritual. Certain types of crystals and stones can be focused upon or carried in one’s pockets throughout the day to influence this energy field in positive ways. Some people find a quiet and natural outdoor environment to perform their grounding exercises. Standing barefoot in natural soil while performing meditative breathing exercises is a common form of grounding.

Key Benefits of Grounding
When grounding exercises are performed regularly and properly, the benefits become very apparent. Along with providing an outlet for releasing negative feelings and thought patterns, grounding can help you achieve:

  • A sense of physical and emotional balance and stability
  • A more profound sense of connection to your immediate and extended environments
  • The ability to focus on problems to solve them and not to worry about them

For those who practice yoga, a grounding technique is to imagine their toes as roots, growing deep into the soil they are standing on. They might also imagine the grass growing through their feet as they meditate. The idea is to bring these imaginings into synchronicity to deepen their connection with the earth and something larger than themselves.

In mental health therapy, grounding is a way of bringing the focus back to the physical body and immediate environment and not being trapped by thoughts in the mind that cause anxiousness, anxiety, and depression.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
