What I Learned From Launching My First Membership

It’s Not Easy

When you see how seamless other people’s online memberships and courses are you wouldn’t think that putting together your own would be such a struggle. It’s actually a lot harder than you think! I had the idea, passion and commitment, but what about the structure? The design? The assets?

I wanted The Business Club to feature material that truly inspired people and the structure had to make sense and be easy to follow. Using Thinkific provided me with a place where I could easily create an asset bank for my members.

Luckily my peers, colleagues and friends were there to keep me focused.  When I didn’t think the membership was possible they were there to pick me back up and remind me why I’m doing this. They reminded me that I have a wealth of knowledge and over thirty years of experience to share!

No one gets it perfect the first time

No one gets it perfect the first time… and no one expects you to! I was worried that people would think they are “wasting” their money if my membership wasn’t gorgeous and glossy from the get go. I always spend time worrying that my stuff isn’t pretty enough but it’s not always about what it looks like… It has to actually work and inspire too. So, I focused on the basics; the content, structure and teachings. I wanted to create a safe space filled with useful resources where brilliant women could focus on improving their lives and businesses. That’s really the heart of The Business Club!

You’ll always have time to make it pretty – just make sure you have your basics down.

Get it over the line and take the learning

If you are thinking of creating your own online membership then I would definitely recommend having a founding members group to help you ‘beta test’ your content before it goes out to a wider audience.

It’s still early days for The Business Club but I am so incredibly thankful to all my founding members. Without them I wouldn’t even have a membership! The founding members of The Business Club are helping me shape and grow the membership every day.  I listen to their feedback and together we are creating an amazing, inspiring community for like minded business women!

It’s possible that you’ll need to rework even the simple stuff like; what day you’ll do your Facebook Lives or host your guest speakers. You’ll soon learn that some days work better than others and with that learning you can adjust accordingly. Slight tweaks and changes will naturally be a part of the learning process but try to remember that you can’t please everyone.

Last week I launched some epic offers to the members I always knew I wanted to reward and support loyalty.

You won’t know if people want it unless you put it out there

If you’re like me and suffer from Impostor Syndrome you’ll be telling yourself all sorts of horrid stuff that will delay the process and release – “No one will buy it…”, “No one will think it’s worth it…”, “There are so many others better than me…” Honestly, the list could go on forever but I’ll stop there – you get the gist!

The waiting was actually worse than when I just put it out there. I was overwhelmed and over the moon with all the lovely comments and feedback from people that weren’t my friends or clients during the initial release. We launched The Business Club on 3rd June for £9.99 per month and it surpassed all my goals. Having strangers pay for my membership because they saw value in it was awesome validation and a sweet reminder that I must be doing something right.

Feedback is crucial

Last night we had one of our bi weekly Business Surgerys – aka Ask Me Anything. There were 7 people on the call and I guess others will watch it on relay. A lovely 45 minutes together getting to know each other, getting under the skin of their business issues and brainstorming solutions. I asked for some feedback as we had time and the resounding feedback was that it was:

  • Packed full of great content
  • Brilliant value for money
  • There was too much content and could I reign it back a bit as they couldn’t get to it all!

WOW – and I was worried about wanting it to be packed with value and actually it’s too much!

Finally, You can’t please everyone!

Listen I made The Business Club Membership launch a super affordable price – £9.99 a month – I thought it was a no brainer. I delivered soooo much value and insight in the first month and yet 3 people decided it wasn’t for them. One said she couldn’t afford it. It took everything I had not to offer it for free.

That’s the beauty of a monthly membership, you can cancel at anytime. I willed her the success she desires and I realised that you just can’t do it for everyone.

I plan to open up the membership soon so if you’d love to join the growing wait list please register your interest by clicking on the link.

It’s not about volume to me, it’s about maintaining quality so I only plan to open it to 20 at a time.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
