Going into the ultrasound, I didn’t know how I’d react to seeing my unborn child for the first time.

Would I feel joy? Would I feel shock? Would I feel an overwhelming doubt that I could ever be capable of keeping another human alive?


I felt all of those things. 

But most of all, I felt gratitude. Because seeing that nearly indecipherable blob on the screen was a monumental victory for my wife, Emily, and me in our long, strange trip toward one day becoming parents.
