When you are a digital startup, there are so many odds against you that you do not have an idea how to beat them. First is the headache on how to market yourself effectively in a market that already has competitors who already feel threatened by your mere entry and want you to call it quits and go packing. Well unless you have a mentor to hold your hand and be there to help you wade through the murky waters, you might as well not start up things.

Recently, I was doing a course on blogging for business by one renowned SEO company called Ahrefs. Now the trainer had this to say that one of the biggest mistakes that startups are going to make is starting ventures that nobody is interested in. He gave an example of this newbie creative fiction writer who goes ahead to write her eBooks and then starts a blog so that she can market her work. But the trouble is the keywords that she focuses on in her blog; nobody would really be interested in looking them up in the search engines. Therefore, nobody might ever notice her leave alone buy her eBooks.

For any startup, data and research done by someone who knows what they are really doing is very important. With proper research, one is able to know what the target audience is looking for and then going ahead to craft content that is going to satisfy their needs.

Embracing technology is going to play a key role in how we are going to rise after this pandemic. Take for example the case of Amazon which is now undoubtedly the most ubiquitous ecommerce giant that is delivering essential products right at your doorstep even in the face of the corona virus. But their model is not that complicated. For one, they are fully online and all that one need in to order for what they are looking for from their online stores.

Talking to CNBC, Mark Cuban is quoted saying that despite the shutdown that is facing every country in the globe, “Amazon stocks are going to continue going up and up”

This is because everyone, even those who were not using the company before are now using them since they are the only trusted source that will deliver what you want.

Then they have a large team of affiliates who earn something for driving traffic towards the ecommerce giant. Yes, in their wisdom, when they were starting out, they knew that they would not be able to make it on their own. So, what do they do, they ask a large group of online influencers to put out a good word for them so that they can leverage on mass advertisement.

But overall what marks the difference between Amazon and all the other companies is that they are keen to deliver what they promise you. No matter how hard it might be, they want the customer to feel that they are indeed king. This might come with lots of inconveniences for the person driving and all, but that is what makes Amazon simply loveable; that they will always deliver.

And then there is the social proof. You see everyone before they make a financial commitment especially online wants to know how the experience was for other people, right? You want to read the testimonials of other customers who have bought from the company in question. This way you are able to know whether they are legit or nothing but scammers in what they claim to do.

And Amazon in their wisdom has this in their wide array of reviews that you find under each product. While there has been evidence that some of the reviews are usually bought, they still are able to make you learn more about the different features of the product as well as the feelings of other people towards the product.

Social media is another aspect that so many startups ignore but it makes such a big difference. Now more than ever, the world is a digital village connected by Internet and social media. Other than socializing, there are companies that are reaping big from Twitter, Whatsapp and Facebook because they have innovated ways in which they can keep their audiences engaged while at the same time selling them their wares.

As I mentioned earlier, to be successfully in all this, you would need a good mentor or a company that offers digital consulting services. This people are going to hold your hand as you wade through search engine optimizaqtion, content creation and even social media management.
