The pandemic may have turned the office world on its head, for better or for worse. Whether we like it or not, we will have to face the fact that working from home will be the norm and should yield the same results as cubicle work. I would like to share with you a few methods I have applied to my day-to-day home shifts!

Tip #1: Having Coffee Ready

Coffee is definitely an office worker’s best friend!

Not only will getting a cup of coffee give you a dose of necessary caffeine to get into the working mood, but it also has a rather surprising effect on your psyche. If you use an item as a reminder to start your work, you will have a better time easing yourself into solving your deadlines!

Personally, I brew myself a cup of espresso every morning as the start of a routine. I love the coffee machine I came across in this Jura A1 Review; it really does wonders for my coffee cups, which remind me to start a productive working routine. You might want to keep the word “routine” in mind because we will see this word a lot in this article.

Tip #2: Dressing Up As If Working In The Office

I found this to be a fitting next step to your routine, as the act of putting on a suit or casual smart clothing has the psychological effect of putting your gears into action. There is a reason why people dress a certain way in the workplace, but the practicality of your work attire is not what I am talking about right now.

Getting dressed as if you’re in your office makes you feel productive

Try to dress as close to how you actually dress in an office setting rather than slipping into something comfortable. I know that stuffing yourself into a shirt sounds rather stuffy when you are now working at home (without the constraints of work legislation), but workplace attire can help your mind kick off the feeling of actually being at work rather than being forced to work.

The next tip I have for you on this list will also help secure this feeling, and it is going to require some setups!

Tip #3: Creating A Separated Area For Working

You may have heard of this tip before: Refrain from working in your bed, or you will not be able to sleep properly. This is extremely right for our case, as some of us have the habit of pulling up our laptop right where we wake up simply because it is inconvenient.

Setting up a functional space is particularly great for setting up a working habit and feeling. When you are surrounded by things that remind you of work, you tend to focus more intensely on the task at hand. So if you have a separate table/corner/room that is dedicated to working documents, not only will you be neater, but you can decorate your space to resemble a working cubicle!

Create your own work space

Creating a separate area also comes with a rather easily ignored upside. For example, when you work and eat in the same area, you tend to leave your dishes, bowls, and utensils lying around.

This will stink up the area and create an extremely tedious mess to clean up afterward. So please work in one place, eat at a different one, and rest down the hall for the sake of hygiene and productivity!

Tip #4: Break Up The Day Into Working “Shifts”

Having a working schedule is great, but how do you go about it correctly with no manager around to enforce it? Most people tend to work on long tangents and blame themselves for the lack of concentration, creativity, and productivity as a whole. To avoid this, I suggest that you do what I have been doing: Breaking the chain of work into short “shifts”!

Having your schedule broken down to bits will let you finish tasks

Generally, I find that I can only hold the best of my productivity and work inspiration for at best 45 minutes to one hour. So I have been breaking up my tasks into small bits and leaving my workspace to go stretch or refill my drink in-between the breaks. Of course, the working span might vary from person to person, but typically, you might want to work for at best 2 hours straight.
