4 Times Alicia Keys Inspired Us to Prioritize Self-Care

Alicia Keys recently took to Twitter to conduct an “Ask Me Anything” — or, rather, an “#AskAlicia.” While some of the questions she received were less than revelatory, like “What’s your favorite Subway sandwich?” (tuna), other fans probed deeper, looking to Keys for her experience — and wisdom — on topics such as well-being and self-preservation. In fact, Keys has been keeping it real all week. As a guest on Jada Pinkett Smith’s Facebook Watch series “Red Table Talk,” Keys spoke honestly about self-doubt: “I’ve been battling some self-worth issues because for whatever reason I’m feeling like I’m not deserving of greatness,” Keys said

On preventing burnout:We all feel overwhelmed. I try to make sure I’m feeling balanced between time for work, time for fam, time for me… sometimes it doesn’t work but I do my best to create [balance].” 

On self-care: “Schedule it. Depend on it. Make it as important as [you] make the kids or the family or work,” she tweeted. “And find people that bring you joy and make time to be with them… It’s more important than we think.” 

On gratitude: “This is how I start most of my mornings off — in grounding and gratitude and asking for clarity. Envisioning the day and putting light around it.”

On meditation: Meditation has been a big change for me in a super-positive way. I see the result and strength and clarity — even my creativity is different and more connected,” she said in her 2017 Glamour cover story. “It might be 10 minutes a day; it might be 20 minutes a day. But every day in this crazy world, it’s a sense of peace and purpose.”
