I would advise women in the AI industry to do everything they can to stay there, as they can ensure that both women and men are involved to create Artificial Intelligence free from prejudice and bias. They should also avoid feeling uncomfortable for being part of a male-dominated industry and they should fight for being treated equally by their male colleagues. What is needed to engage more women into the AI industry is to offer equal opportunities, probably, by employing the same amount of qualified men and women.

As part of my series about the women leading the Artificial Intelligence industry, I had the pleasure of interviewing Sophie Miles. After a successful career in the banking sector, and when everything seemed like her life was resolved, Sophie decided it was time to change the direction of her life. In 2009, she decided to start her own project in which she and her colleague would be their own bosses. That idea nowadays is a multinational website specialized in the comparison of financial services aimed to help people get into the business world.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Can you share with us the ‘backstory” of how you decided to pursue this career path?

I never thought I would end up doing artificial intelligence. For me that happens only in futuristic movies, which I still hate to watch. But to be successful in this segment, you have to know about high tech more than any other field.

First, I had to learn how to program a website, then how websites work. By the time our websites were ready, I knew much more about programming than what I had ever imagined learning. But that was just the beginning.

In the next months we needed to learn about SEO and develop strategies for our sites to rank first in all the countries in which we operate. And once that happened I had to learn about AI in order to provide a better service to our users.

What lessons can others learn from your story?

You have to learn about each and every technological advance that arises. Because you never know which of them will apply to what you do and it results in an advantage over your competitors.

Can you tell our readers about the most interesting projects you are working on now?

The idea of applying artificial intelligence in the comparison of financial products has been our goal of these years. The business world is often complicated, and artificial intelligence has to make it easy for us. I know it sounds tough, but there is nothing wrong with receiving a little help within your finances, in the same way, that an accountant or a financial consultant does.

Our website has been highlighted in all of Latin America for being one of the simplest in the market. Our goal is to continue betting on simplicity but be more accurate in our suggestions. Each answer has to be personalized to each user with little time and effort. No one can do it better than AI.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

Believe it or not, my mentor was a much younger and less experienced person than me. Eric was just a young man who used to work for Google. After seeing what we were doing, he joined in and indicated the paths to follow. Actually, Eric is our business partner and a great friend, who renounced the company of his dreams to get on this adventure of entrepreneurship. He brought to our table the idea of adding artificial intelligence to our financial products comparison service.

What are the 5 things that most excite you about the AI industry? Why?

I consider the AI industry fascinating as it is here to make the world of work and our lives easier. Artificial Intelligence is being used to carry out those tedious and lengthy tasks that nobody wants to do. Furthermore, it enables multi-tasking, thus easing workload. Finally, it can operate 24/7 without breaks or downtime, which can have tremendous benefits for businesses. The AI industry is changing some of our ways of living too: smart homes can significantly reduce energy usage and provide better security and voice-based personal assistants enable us to control different aspects of our devices.

What are the 5 things that concern you about the AI industry? Why?

The AI industry does pose some threats. Autonomous weapons, those that can identify, target and kill, are quickly moving from science fiction to reality and the threat of decision-making technology is also terrifying. Besides, the AI industry has the possibility of creating superintelligent systems that could outperform humans. As Artificial Intelligence can do what humans do, it can leave thousands jobless by replacing employees by automated systems. However, these automated systems do not ensure that the task will be accomplished correctly, so my concern is if Artificial Intelligence can do as well as humans.

As you know, there is an ongoing debate between prominent scientists, (personified as a debate between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg,) about whether advanced AI has the future potential to pose a danger to humanity. What is your position about this?

My position as regards the debate between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg is that of a positive future of advanced AI. I do not believe that Artificial Intelligence will bring only destruction, like Musk does. Deeply-integrated Artificial Intelligence can be used to bring about many improvements in the quality of our lives. I strongly believe that technology can be used for good and bad. We only need to be careful about how it is going to be used and by whom.

What can be done to prevent such concerns from materializing? And what can be done to assure the public that there is nothing to be concerned about?

It is true that when it comes to Artificial Intelligence one must be cautious. Artificially intelligent systems should undergo several security tests to prove them safe. Another thing is certain: a single failure of technology cannot be used as an argument to disregard every use of Artificial Intelligence. What can be done to assure the public to trust Artificial Intelligence is to focus on the accomplishments of it.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world? Can you share a story?

The business world is cruel. Not knowing something is not enough reason to be forgiven. Helping people make better deals is one of the best ways to contribute to humanity. And that is the idea of QuotesAdvisor, power with our knowledge in the industry added with technology to help the normal user to obtain better rates of their loans or investments.

As you know, there are not that many women in your industry. Can you share 3 things that you would you advise to other women in the AI space to thrive?

I would advise women in the AI industry to do everything they can to stay there, as they can ensure that both women and men are involved to create Artificial Intelligence free from prejudice and bias. They should also avoid feeling uncomfortable for being part of a male-dominated industry and they should fight for being treated equally by their male colleagues. What is needed to engage more women into the AI industry is to offer equal opportunities, probably, by employing the same amount of qualified men and women.

Can you advise what is needed to engage more women into the AI industry?

The technological revolution is a new challenge and an opportunity for women in our struggle for equality.

What is your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share a story of how that had relevance to your own life?

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

I would use Artificial Intelligence to help people with other complicated tasks. As for example taxes (some of this is already in development, insurance, personal finance and even payment of home services.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
