I think everyone needs to have an all-inclusive mindset when it comes to health and wellness. People need be conscious of their eating habits, exercise patterns, mental mindset and how they are taking care of their bodies. Natural and herbal supplements can help improve your life without chemicals and expensive bills. In addition, health care providers and insurance companies should work with naturopathy doctors to supplement and complement treatments.

Ihad the pleasure to interview Jing Struve. As the Executive Director at Farlong Pharmaceutical, Jing is responsible for strategic planning and management of daily operations. Jing is on the board of directors of Acupuncture Corporation of America and is currently studying Traditional Chinese Medicine through the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine distance learning program. Jing graduated from California State University Northridge with honors, earning a Master of Science in Engineering Management and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. Inspired by the healing power of ancient remedies, Jing is passionate about applying these remedies in concert with modern technology to assist people in living healthier and better lives. Jing is a pioneer in the industry as she develops medicinal botanical ingredients and formulations to benefit individuals around the world.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

For thirteen years, I was a software engineer developing blood glucose management systems for diabetes patients. I watched people suffering from chronic diseases without a cure available. This has always challenged me to seek a solution. I thought to myself, there has to be a natural way for healing…

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began leading your company?

A late-stage breast cancer patient was told by her oncologist that she only had 12 months left to live due to her tumors that had spread to her lungs and spine. She decided using natural ways to improve her remaining quality of life. Four months after she started taking one of our botanical formulas, her oncologist pronounced her cancer free. Everyone was so amazed by the miracle. It brings me to tears, and I feel that everything we do is for the greater good to give people hope.

Can you share with our readers about the innovations that you are bringing to and/or see in the healthcare industry? How do you envision that this might disrupt the status quo? Which “pain point” is this trying to address?

We are innovating plant-based medicinal remedies to heal people naturally. Natural medicine is as powerful and effective as chemical drugs, but with significantly less side effects. The further development and education of natural medicine will continue to combat the harmful side effects of taking chemical drugs.

What are your “5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started” and why. (Please share a story or example for each.)

I wish someone told me that I should have studied Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) before I started. It would have made my work so much easier. I’m taking a series of TCM online courses now to improve my understanding of healing of plants. I should have studied human anatomy, jingluo and yingyang, so I can understand how the human body works like a connected universal system.

Let’s jump to the main focus of our interview. According to this study cited by Newsweek, the US healthcare system is ranked as the worst among high income nations. This seems shocking. Can you share with us 3–5 reasons why you think the US is ranked so poorly?

I think a lot of people in the U.S. have trouble getting access to quality health care for many reasons including high costs and geographical locations.

People are also confused on how to navigate health insurance companies, getting referrals, billing and deductibles.

I think people need to focus more on natural and herbal solutions, including visiting naturopathy doctors and acupuncturists, which are often more accessible and less costly.

You are a “healthcare insider”. Can you share 5 changes that need to be made to improve the overall US healthcare system? Please share a story or example for each.

The healthcare system is doing a wonderful implementation of replacing opium with acupuncture for pain management. It would be great if insurance companies could cover acupuncture treatments to make it available to more people.

Thank you! It’s great to suggest changes, but what specific steps would need to be taken to implement your ideas? What can individuals, corporations, communities and leaders do to help?

I think everyone needs to have an all-inclusive mindset when it comes to health and wellness. People need be conscious of their eating habits, exercise patterns, mental mindset and how they are taking care of their bodies. Natural and herbal supplements can help improve your life without chemicals and expensive bills. In addition, health care providers and insurance companies should work with naturopathy doctors to supplement and complement treatments.

What are your favorite books, podcasts, or resources that inspire you to be a better healthcare leader? Can you explain why you like them?

I read and listen to quite a variety of books and podcasts. I think it is important to expand your horizons and be knowledgeable on all aspects of healthcare and wellness. Being in the industry, it’s important for me to know about the latest in medicine research, development and manufacturing. The more I know, the better I can help create products that change peoples’ lives. Some of the podcasts include The Business of Healthcare by NPR, The HCBiz Show!, The Future of Healthcare, Nutrcaeuticals World podcast and Vitafoods Insights podcast.
