As part of my series featuring Women in Wellness, I had the pleasure of interviewing Simone Fortier. Simone is the Founder of the Fascia Training Institute, and is an internationally recognized pain management expert. With a myriad of professional athletes and even medical doctors of the highest calibers as her patients, Simone Fortier is known for her intuitive understanding of the root cause of pain coupled with her vast knowledge of human anatomy and the lymphatic, cranial, and trigger point systems. A highly regarded lecturer, teacher, and innovative fascia therapist, Simone Fortier is also the author of two books: How to Beat Brain Burps (an exercise based way for children to ignite all facets of their brain for streamlined learning) and Gaining Control Over Pain.


Thank you so much for joining us Simone! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I remember at the young age of 12, I made three decisions

1. I would be self-employed

2. I would live in the Southwest United States

3. I would never hurt myself (do drugs, smoke, etc.) to get back at my parents or other people.

Upon graduating from University, I had a significant amount of debt, a zero balance in my bank account, and yet I wanted to start a holistic clinic. Being naive and/or of strong faith, I fully believed this would happen. I had several people who wanted to work for me, so I had to find office space. I went out to search for this space and came home devastated that I could not afford first, last months and security deposit. I was having a complete meltdown sobbing, and talking to God. I said, “look Lord it’s not like I am sitting on my butt not doing anything if this is meant to be, I need help.”

The next day, I was volunteering at the Naturopathic Association, which I had been doing for the past year. For the first time ever, I answered the office phone (as it wasn’t part of my usual duties) and that phone call changed my life. The voice on the other line wanted to place an advertisement in the newsletter for the Naturopathic Association, describing office space that he had for rent and even offering six months free up front. We met in person soon after that and did a handshake deal. I leased the space, subleased the extra areas to a chiropractor and psychologist, and my practice began to thrive.

Can you share the most interesting story that occurred to you in the course of your career?

I am an experiential learner. I have had almost every physical injury known to mankind. I have had 6 concussions, separated ribs, torn labrum in my left shoulder, torn ligaments in both ankles, nerve damage in my left hip, and herniated discs at L3, L4, and L5. I lost my hearing completely from 2004 to 2006 and also had musical tinnitus and TMD. I have suffered from migraines that were so bad I needed to go to the emergency room for numbness on the entire left side of my body which was affecting my breathing. I once almost died of Salmonella poisoning in South America, which held me in the ICU for 10 days where I could neither walk nor talk. All of the injuries and life experiences I have sustained have been my greatest teachers. All of the physical injuries led me on a path to healing. In each case I knew that there was a solution to my injury, and I set off into the world to find the remedy to heal myself. Finding these solutions have given me the power to help others in similar instances, and since there are so many far and in between, I feel so grateful to be able to share my accumulated knowledge with the world. Every injury and pain have helped me create programs and systems for my patient and understanding pain from the inside out, as well as from a textbook, has given me a unique perspective. The journey to being pain-free continues for me and for my patients every single day, and on most days, I see a 100 percent success rate.

Can you share with us your biggest mistake and its lesson?

The biggest mistake I made was not to delegate from the very beginning.

Delegating and creating a team with a similar mindset helps elevate and accelerate success. Delegating is the key to success.

When it comes to health and wellness, how is the work you are doing helping to make a bigger impact in the world?

My work is universal in that every day I am helping others recover from injuries and pain in order to get their lives on track, allow sustainability, and heal for the future. When I am able to offer a patient hope and the belief in recovery, nothing else is more powerful.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you where you are? Can you share a story about that?

I see the world backward and am motivated by being told that “I cannot do” something. The people who did not believe in me actually turned out to be my greatest motivators in helping me reach my goals, but this style goes back to my family history, of not having support, financially or emotionally. I am self-sufficient. I do things for myself. I have direction and drive and I attract what I am looking for, and in this is pride.

You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good for the most amount of people, what would that be?

The movement I would start is Brain Therapy and Exercises. Learning how to heal our brains, with movement, sound, and nutrition. A balanced brain respects all life and the planet.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Lifestyle Tweaks

1. Stay Focused by writing goals: daily, weekly, and one major goal for the year.

2. Eat “Real Food” — not processed junk.

3. Listen to solfeggio frequency music at least one hour a day for physical and mental healing

What are your “3 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why? Please share a story or example for each.

3 Things I wish someone told me:

  1. Delegate — stop being a perfectionist, the “I can do it all myself” mindset will only slow your growth.
  2. Create Systems — Work smarter not harder.
  3. Invest and save — One day you wake up and you are old. Everyone needs to have a year’s salary in the bank at any time.

Which people in history inspire you the most? Why?

When I think of inspiration, Mother Theresa comes to the forefront of my mind. In a similar way, Sister Briege McKenna heals people through prayer and played a dynamic role in my life when she did so for me, causing me to regain hearing after an injury.
