As a part of my series about the women in wellness, I had the pleasure of interviewing Heather Marianna. Heather is a popular Youtuber, whose sassy DIY beauty videos using common kitchen ingredients has been viewed by over 3 million fans in conjunction with her all-natural whimsical skincare line, Beauty Kitchen, founded in 2013. A respected and reputable expert in the beauty industry, Heather, has appeared on over 80 national TV beauty segments and been featured on prominent websites including The Today Show, E! Online, Yahoo, The Huffington Post and more. Beauty Kitchen celebrity fans include: Vanessa Simmons, Christina Milian, Dascha Polanco, Lisa Vanderpump, Viola Davis and more. Beauty Kitchen products have also been gifted at high-profile award show events including The Grammys, Golden Globes, Emmys and Espy gifting suites. Beauty enthusiasts can shop the brand including collagen eye gels, lace face masks, bath bombs, monthly beauty boxes, sugar scrubs and more.
Thank you so much for doing this with us Heather! What is your “backstory”?
I’ve always been into beauty and skincare and had been spending hundreds of dollars a month on product for years and years but really had no idea what I was really putting on my skin after all, the majority of ingredients on any given beauty product feature a bevy of fancy-named chemicals that the average person is oblivious to. Frustrated with feeling blind to what I was putting on my skin, which mind you is our body’s largest organ, I began researching all-natural solutions for various skincare issues. In 2012, I launched my YouTube series where I demonstrated DIY beauty treatments using common kitchen household ingredients and within just a few short months, my channel’s popularity skyrocketed, and I had millions of views on each of my videos. During this time, I began gifting close friends with some of my hand-made beauty products and they were always super blown away and captivated with my creations. I knew I wasn’t the only one who was intrigued with all-natural beauty, and in 2013 I launched my own company, Beauty Kitchen by Heather Marianna which encompasses the at-home spa experience with a selection of fun, whimsical and all-natural beauty products including bath bombs, eye gels, face masks, sugar scrubs, lip masks and more. Today, all of my products are available at BeautyKitchen.net and at my retail store, Beauty Kitchen Boutique, located in Boulder City, NV, just 20 minutes away from the famed Las Vegas Strip!
Can you share your top three “lifestyle tweaks” that you believe will help support people’s journey towards better wellbeing?
I think the three most important things are:
- Wake up slowly, I don’t set an alarm in summer months I use the natural sunlight to wake me up and I don’t look at my phone for at least an hour (which was a hard one to break)
- Drink water before any coffee in the morning and say a few things to yourself on what you are grateful for even if it’s something you are working on speak into the future use the universe. I don’t use electronic calendars, I prefer to write everything down. I get too many emails a day to overwhelm myself with calendar updates.
- Pat your self on the back. Make goals, set realistic deadlines and celebrate your victories. So often we are busy beating ourselves up.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?
There have been many interesting stories. I would say meeting great people who are working to take my company to next level has been the most interesting so far. It is just a rule that you always don’t want to burn bridges with anyone. Always work hard and keep your word, you never know when people you didn’t think you would need will circle back around.
Can you share a story about the biggest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?
There have been many. One of the biggest was trying to do every single thing myself and not hiring enough help. I have now hired my assistant Michelle an assistant of her own and things are moving a lot smoother. Sometimes you need to spend the money to make things run smoother for you because your business is only as good as you are. If you’re worn out and tired then your business will be too.
When it comes to health and wellness, how is the work you are doing helping to make a bigger impact in the world?
I think the green beauty movement is so very important. Not only are we only using products with ingredients made naturally from the earth but we looking at more eco-friendly bio-degradable packaging for the future. Beauty Kitchen strives to educate consumers on the importance of knowing what they are putting on their skin.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?
Everyone, from Caroline who created my packaging to everyone who works hard for me, to all the customers who have supported me from the beginning to everyone who follows us on social. It all helps the company and our sales.
If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of wellness to the most amount of people, what would that be?
Everyone should stop using plastic straws. We are creating a kit with a sea turtle bath bomb and soap and glass straw and a glass bottle that says don’t be a shady beach to help the effort. I also think people in general should be more caring of their selves and proactive with self-care. Taking care of yourself is an absolute wellness must!
What is your “3 Things I Wish Someone Told Me Before I Started” and why?
- Don’t over work yourself, I usually work six days a week 12 hours a day and now I am working the same amount of hours but trying to take my time in the mornings and some gym time during the day for my own personal sanity.
- Don’t trust everyone. Unfortunately, not everyone wants to see you succeed. Find a healthy balance.
- Hire people who work for you like it’s their own business. I am so lucky to have those people, hard to find but keep looking they are out there and they are work investing in!
Do you have a “girl-crush” in this industry? If you could take one person to brunch, who would it be? (Let another “woman in wellness” know that you respect her as a teacher and guide! )
Bethany Frankel! She is such a wellness girl boss. I admire her so much!
Sustainability, veganism, mental health and environmental changes are big topics at the moment. Which one of these causes is dearest to you, and why?
Mental health. I suffer from bad anxiety and panic attacks and I take CBD daily to help. It’s really hard to explain my attacks because they come on so fast and out of nowhere. People don’t realize it’s a real problem and its debilitating. When you go the natural and not pharma route to medicate it makes it even harder to control. People need to realize that those things people say “just get over it about” are not as easy for people with anxiety and panic attacks.
