Why stop judging should be our most important new year resolution?

It is natural for human beings to judge, not only other human beings but also places, objects and even ourselves. Judging is not bad at all, we can give constructive criticism based in our knowledge to help others. But there are also negative and empty criticism, those that instead of have a benefit, affect the self-esteem and could even destroy relationships.

But what if, among our new year resolutions, we leave behind the bad habit of negative judging? Let’s focus in what’s really important and stop concerning about what others do (or don’t do). Here are 4 reasons that will convince you.

Criticizing is exposing our weaknesses

It is well-known that someone’s judgments are actually demonstrations of its own weaknesses. Have you heard that saying that goes ‘Tell Me What You Presume and I’ll Tell You What You’re Missing’, well, it’s very accurate, when we criticize someone else’s physical or intellect, we could be exposing our own fears and insecurities.

We can be wrong

And you know it. How many times in your life you have changed your mind about someone that, at first sight, you didn’t like? Have you ever disliked someone’s look, hairstyle or accent, but later noticed they’re not how you pictured them at all?. From now on, take a few minutes to get to know them before start judging.

Accept diversity

We’re all different, and that’s what diversity is about. We have the freedom to think different, to make mistakes and to change or minds. Tolerance is a sign of respect and even if you don’t agree with somebody, that doesn’t give you the right to bad-mouthing… what takes us to another saying that you should have heard: “live and let live”.

Practice Mindfulness

Jon Kabat-Zinn defines Mindfulness as the “awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally”. This is a scientifically studied practice and it is recognized as an efefctive way for improving self-confidence, wellness and for reducing physical and psychological symptoms associated with stress.
