One of the most challenging yet rewarding careers in Australia is that of a Disability Support Worker. It involves working in professional setups like community-based group homes or at private healthcare centres to provide care and support to the people with physical or intellectual disability. From aiding the patients in their daily chores to helping them find a place in the society, a Disability Support Worker must make every possible attempt of helping them to maintain an independent life.

The job is usually flexible and uniquely tailored to the needs of the clients that you deal with. While it seems like a simple task to the onlookers, a professional Disability Support Worker needs to have a lot of empathy and patience while dealing with disabled people. You, as a Disability Support Worker, are also expected to be readily active and equally attentive while lifting and shifting the patient.

Generally, a small group of clients are worked upon. You develop a strong bond and greater understanding with your client over time. The working hours are usually divided into shifts, and professionally, a Disability Support Worker is expected not to stay beyond the shift hours.

Duties

  • Help them develop and practice personal hygiene and health care.
  • Encourage the client and help build their confidence as an independent unit of the society.
  • Medical assistance
  • Help the client to build a personal and societal relationship.

These are some of the most important duties to perform, while the basic duties like helping them with their daily routine, bathing and even cooking at times are the core of the profession.

Since it is a challenging job, an aspirant must have the right set of skills and knowledge to deal with the disabled people. Certificate courses like Certificate IV in Disability Melbourne helps in imparting the needful. This certificate helps an individual to get better pay scale and ever better working positions such as senior DSW roles, Team Leader, Coordinator A&R, Manager A&R, Respite Client Liaison etc.

Is it the right job for you?

Any person who is down to earth, committed to work, empathetic, compassionate, and equally practical is perfect to be a Disability Support Worker. It is also important for you to have team spirit, and to be able to work together as a team.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
