TEFL certifications have gained popularity in recent years. The increase in the number of Americans traveling abroad to teach English has made certifications essential for demonstrating teaching competencies. There are a large number of TEFL certifications available to meet everyone’s needs and budget.

Importance

The acronym TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language and is intended for teachers who teach classes abroad, in a country where English is not the primary language. Those who teach English in the United States or Canada to immigrants are known as ESL teachers or tutors, or English as a Second Language (English as a second language). Other ways to refer to these instructors are Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages or TESOL and Teaching English as a Second Language or TESL. Most names can be used interchangeably and their use varies depending on the educational institution that uses it.

Types of certifications

A TELF certification is a course that allows people to instruct others in the use of the English language. Certification is offered in a variety of formats, from online workshops to year-long courses. The most prestigious TELF certifications are those offered by the Boston Language Institute, the CELTA certification (Originally from the United Kingdom) and the certificate in TESOL (Teacher of English for Speakers of Other Languages) or Cert TESOL.

Features

A certification course typically includes a variety of topics, including language teaching techniques, correcting mistakes, selecting the right material for the class, lesson planning, teaching grammar, and cross-cultural issues. Graduates of tefl courses are better prepared to serve students who speak little or no English, regardless of their age. With the majority of graduates seeking employment abroad, courses include training in job interview techniques and contract negotiation.

Aspects to consider

Shorter certification courses, such as those that last a few weeks, usually cover the fundamentals mentioned above and can cost anywhere from a few hundred to thousands of dollars. Longer courses, such as the California Teachers of English Learners Certificate, a graduate program offered by the University of Phoenix, are longer in duration. It is a comprehensive program, consisting of four six-week classes and one week of orientation, and is designed to prepare teaching professionals who wish to obtain the Cross-cultural Language and Academic Development certificate. and Academic) or CLAD, for its acronym in English.

Geographic location

Given that the requirements vary from country to country, it is difficult to estimate what type of certificate would be the most suitable for working as a teacher around the world. Countries like Japan require a CELTA certificate (from Cambridge University), in addition to a Bachelor’s degree for the issuance of a teacher visa. Other countries like Russia accept any type of TEFL certificate, so it would be convenient to obtain a cheaper one. Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe are the most popular destinations for TELFL teachers.
