Why are knees replaced? What are the causes of knee replacement? These and other questions might be crossing your mind. A knee joint has many components, such as ligament and fluids that aid its rotation while walking, running, or playing. Minor injuries can be treated without surgery, but major ones would need a knee replacement.

Knee replacement is also known as knee arthroscopy. Knee replacements might fail even when the Orthopedists involved are the best. What are the causes of failure? According to the orthopedic surgery witness, knee arthroscopy is a safe procedure but has its own risks. Before we look at signs for knee replacement failure, we need to know why knees are replaced.

Reasons for knee replacement

  • Rheumatoid, Osteoarthritis and traumatic arthritis
  • Fractured knees
  • Torn Meniscus and ligaments
  • Depletion of synovial fluid
  • Broken Cartilages
  • Abnormal growth and formation of the knee
  • Avascular necrosis
  • Knee joint pain

Knee replacement is a risky process that if not handles carefully may result in other complications. According to a study carried out by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, there are several risks connected to knee replacements. This will hinder the operation of the replaced joint as well as how the person lives.

Risks possible after a knee replacement

Deep vein thrombosis, is a condition that is likely to be experienced by many patients who undergo knee arthroscopy. Regular exercise should be done to increase the amount of blood circulating.

Instability, dislocation of the kneecap after surgery. This might happen due to tampering with the knee after surgery.

Surgical tools left inside the knee zone as a result of negligence.

These risks can be avoided when the Orthopedists follow the surgical routines diligently. After a knee replacement, however successful it was it might have failed or fail later after surgery. What are the signs of knee replacement failure?

Signs of a failed knee replacement

Pain after a surgery

After a knee surgery physical therapy and activities are needed so as to get the patient to adjust. Pain during this exercise is a sign of failed knee replacement and needs to be worked on to resolve.

Loose implant

The implants used in a knee replacement procedure must be attached firmly to the bones. With time, the implant may loosen and cause pain. Loosening may be caused by a lot of pressure being exerted on the knee which might tear the cement attaching the implant to the bone.

These infections that occur after surgery are called Peri-prosthetic joint infections. They might occur shortly after the surgery or later on.

Instability is caused by wearing of the ligaments. A knee implant is designed to work with the existing ligaments of the knee joint. Having a broken ligament will cause instability.

Despite having a knee implant, when an accident occurs, you might fracture your knee bones. This is Peri-prosthetic fractures.

Wrong alignment of the implant

This might be a result of surgeons’ negligence or natural circumstances, which might lead to pain, poor knee functioning, and instability.
