The Inspiration Behind My Film For for Planned Parenthood’s Unstoppable Art Project

I have continued to care deeply about the fundamental right to be able to control my own body and my own future and want to protect this right for my daughters and all women.

In my early 20’s, I had an abortion. I was not ready in any way to become a mother. I was incredibly grateful to be able to receive a safe abortion, start my career and then later, meet my husband who I have been married to for twenty years, and to have children with when I was ready. I have continued to care deeply about the fundamental right to be able to control my own body and my own future and want to protect this right for my daughters and all women. I’m honored to create this new film for the UNSTOPPABLE ART project for Planned Parenthood and channel my passion towards the fundamental value of equality in a creative way.

Planned Parenthood has launched a new campaign, UNSTOPPABLE.

UNSTOPPABLE is about building a world, especially now when our rights are on the line, where each person has the freedom and ability to control their own body and lives.

UNSTOPPABLE ART is an initiative within the UNSTOPPABLE campaign to engage artists to contribute and create compelling visual artworks, writings, and videos. You can check out UNSTOPPABLE ART HERE, including a powerful video by UNSTOPPABLE ART Executive Producer Tanya Selvaratnam and featuring a song by MILCK. Confirmed artists in the initiative include Zoe Buckman, Chitra Ganesh, Hillary Jordan, Shirin Neshat, Xaviera Simmons, Mickalene Thomas, and Carrie Mae Weems.

The newest UNSTOPPABLE ART piece is the UNSTOPPABLE Manifesto Video, by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Tiffany Shlain. The video brings to life the Manifesto (the core of UNSTOPPABLE) and the resounding message that together, we are a movement and we are unstoppable. Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, states, “The UNSTOPPABLE Manifesto video is a rallying call for people to join the movement and build the world we want to see — where everyone has the freedom and opportunity to control their own bodies and their own futures — regardless of race, gender, income, zip code, or immigration status. There is unprecedented energy and momentum to unite around full equality for all — and women are leading the way. One of us can be dismissed, two of us can be ignored. But, together, we are a movement, and we are unstoppable.”

Reflecting on the opportunity to direct the video, Shlain states, “In my early 20’s, I had an abortion. I’m honored and proud to work with UNSTOPPABLE ART and channel my passion towards the fundamental value of equality in a creative way.”

Shlain’s UNSTOPPABLE Manifesto Video features a mix of women activists and artists ranging in age from 8 to 92, including Ruchira Gupta, Cindi Leive, Gloria Miguel, and Debbie Millman, with support from Elizabeth Banks, Mayim Bialik, Tiffany Boone, Laura Harrier, Felicity Huffman, Allison Janney, Padma Lakshmi, Marlee Matlin, Alysia Reiner, Alia Shawkat, Analeigh Tipton, Tamara Tunie, and more.

The UNSTOPPABLE Manifesto Video also features Sia’s song, “Unstoppable.”

Together, these voices, videos, and testimonials will raise awareness and rally support for the foundational role that sexual and reproductive health plays in achieving full equality, and connects the dots to issues like equal pay, sexual violence prevention, and paid family leave — issues that are essential to making progress in this country for all people.

UNSTOPPABLE’s widespread presence as a platform for support ensures that together our voices will be heard and that a world where we control our lives, bodies, and freedom is a reality.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
