Through the eye of the Eagle

While the world still turning

While the world still burning

The Eagle

Bending his eye with unheard melodies

Watches the fable unfold with leaves

Floating over roiling seas

While children call, call to leaves

To mothers and fathers still as trees

Still as a fable, still as a frieze

Unfolding over Vieques and Aguadilla

Over the Strait of Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara and

The Black Sea, through the eye of the Eagle

Reflecting twenty thousand sheep at the bottom

Of the sea, the Eagle—swerves to the world’s

Magnetic field, the Eagle gazes, seeing all

The fall of walls, the rising call

Of a world wild with desire for rain

To quench the throat of worlds on fire

The Eagle’s eye, a light of wire

While the world still turning

While the world still burning

The Eagle bends his eye

Watching the fable

unfold with leaves

drifting over

roiling seas
