Arriving or departing from Madrid by train: how to get from the Atocha or Chamartín stations to your hotel or vice versa

Chamartín Station

The subway lines that arrive or leave here are 1 (Light Blue) and 10 (Azul Marinho) and from Chamartín we can reach important central places like Plaza de España or Gran Via. This important Madrid train station is located to the north of the city, near the famous Eurostars towers, and from there depart the interurban trains, the regional – Spanish cities and the high-speed trains (AVE), some international that go to capitals like Lisbon and Paris.

Atocha Station

The subway line that arrives or leaves Atocha is the 1 (Light Blue) that can arrive/leave in Atocha or Atocha Renfe, from where we can go to important central places like the Gran Via. Madrid’s largest railway station is located near the Retiro Park and the Prado, Caixa Forum and Reina Sofia areas. At the Atocha station, the commuter trains, the interurban trains, the regional trains in Spain (cities like Seville, Valencia, Alicante) and the high-speed trains (AVE), which go to Barcelona, for example, arrive.

To get to know the beautiful surroundings of Madrid: beats back to Toledo, Avila, Segovia, and Salamanca

There are two economic ways and we always recommend when you ask us about trips to the environs of Madrid (and there are not few). By train or by car. But why?

For train travel, the national Renfe service is used. Renfe is the body responsible for the Spanish rail service. The national service takes you to nearby cities such as the charming Toledo of Don Quixote de La Mancha (in ± 30 min), Segovia and its cathedral and Roman aqueduct (in ± 1 hour and 40 min) or Salamanca and its university (± 2 hours and 45 min). The great advantage is the comfort. The downside is to depend on the time and schedules of the trains. Tickets can be purchased on the Renfe website or in Portuguese on the Rail Europe website, which sells tickets from virtually all European and world rail companies. Or personally, in the big stations (the main ones are Atocha and Chamartín).

For travel by car, of course, the advantage is being able to stop in several places at the same time, without depending on trains or schedules. In addition, it can be more economical. We recommend Rental Cars great search engine for quotes and reservations. This service belongs to the same group of Booking.com and is always with great offers and many options for rental companies, including very good evaluations of those who have used the services.

You can also schedule trips to these and other cities with day trips or more, an easy and quick way, including a local guide in Portuguese or Spanish. For this, visit the site of our super partner Viator and check out all tour options.

Where to stay in Madrid: accommodation offers

Madrid has an excessive offer of hotels, unusual for a city of its size. In fact, the number of establishments opened in recent years is worrying, especially in the central area. For visitors, obviously, it’s a great deal: competition results in better services and accommodations, even in places where it would be cheaper.

Being hosted in the most central area of the city, around Gran Via, you can do almost everything on foot in Madrid, using the subway or bus to one place or another, buying the single ticket. Are you anxious to visit this beautiful destination then book tickets from cheap flights to Copenhagen agency now.
