The Umbrella

How often do you carry your umbrella?

You are so worried of getting wet in the rain

That you carry an umbrella wherever you go

Maybe you aren’t wrong in doing so

Especially if you’re coming from a place with a bipolar forecast

Where it’s sunny at noon

But pours at night

And you find yourself

Why was I not prepared?

The unannounced rain

Leaves you so wet

That you crave warmth

Of a fireplace

Or a hot drink

Or a warm hug

And you think to yourself

Never again will I leave the house without an umbrella

But then you leave

You leave the city and recreate your life elsewhere

And maybe the weather isn’t so temperamental there

But you find yourself

Carrying that umbrella again

That umbrella that became a part of you

So much that you don’t know who you are without it

Or who you could be

And you wonder

What use the umbrella has now

When most days are sunny

And you trust the forecast

It shines when it says it will

And it rains when it says it will

And slowly

That umbrella

Begins to sit on your shelf

And not in your hands

As it once used to
