Finding that space, the silence within the cacophony of everyday life, can be a challenge. That’s the place where we discover and uncover our best self. Where we find and live our values and connection to God or spirit – the is-ness beyond us.

If you live in a city, finding true silence can be challenging and so I make do with quiet. I need the quiet – the space – to connect with myself.  Over time I have found ways to find that space in the tumult, using what’s available to make it happen.

Firstly, decide.  Decide to use the space and time we usually reserve for being irritable at waiting – in lines or traffic.  Next time you’re kept waiting at the doctor’s office, at the bank, or check out counter, use these tools to take your power back:

+take three deep breaths and rename this time as ‘my space’

+purposefully scan your body and release the tension you’re carrying around your shoulders and neck.

+choose to let calm enter your mind and physical body allowing the rhythm of your breath and heartbeat to be in the moment – in your space of peace

Secondly, use those few moments on awakening to recognize the space, instead of a jump-start to your day, connect with your body and spirit by honoring your life and the new day before your busy world invades.  Whether you can take 30 seconds to be purposeful or 10 minutes at the start of each day will help smooth out your day.

Once the concept of ‘my space’ becomes part of your life awareness, you’ll find you feel less frazzled and frantic.  You’ll feel more empowered, more in charge of your life and the various speeds in which you live it.
