Body composition is the ratio of bone to muscle to fat and water that you have in your body. We like to remove the guesswork in everything that we do at Bodyshot, and DNA testing is a key part of how we do that. Many people want to lose fat or lose weight, to change their body composition in some way. You might also want to add muscular tone to your body; lose some fat, gain some muscle, and you’ve got a more metabolically active body, and therefore, you’ll be able to manage your weight and your energy levels better.

The DNA test that we use looks at 50 dominant genes that relate strictly to nutrition and fitness. What the DNA testing does, is it looks at your genes, and it understands, for example, what your sensitivity to carbohydrate is, or saturated fat. It also looks at your sensitivity to things like lactose and gluten, which can cause bloating and inflammation in the body. And what your basic requirements are for certain vitamins and minerals, like D-3, B-6, B-12, or antioxidants.

And because it removes the guesswork, you not only get to understand your body much better, but you know how to feed and nourish it. I think this is incredibly important, particularly if you’re thinking, “well, I have a small amount of budget to spend on this kind of stuff, and I don’t have a lot of time for trial and error.” DNA testing removes all of that guesswork. It gets away from the one-size-fits-all approach to diet and exercise.

From a fitness perspective, it will also tell you how well configured you are for power versus endurance exercise. Again, really important if you’re short on time. Make sure you’re getting maximum bang for buck by doing an exercise or workout that’s really configured to your genotype.

There are other ways to do this; you could do an elimination diet, where you simply cut foods out and see how you respond to it, whether it’s positive or negative. You could do other forms of testing to see whether you’re sensitive to things like gluten. But a DNA test, in my mind, is very comprehensive. It looks at everything that you really need to understand in order to set off on your weight loss or your fitness journey.
