The greatest romance you can have is with yourself

Why not write a ‘love letter’ to yourself today?

Love is a universal language

Love is a universal language!  I love you (English)!  Mo nife re (Yoruba)!  Ti amo (Italian)!  我爱你 (Mandarin)!  Jeg elsker dig (Danish)!  Waan ku jeclahay (Somali)!  E aroha ana ahau ki a koe (Maori)!

Love can transform earth into a utopia and earthlings into superheroes

These three little words in English and other translations can transform earth into a utopia and earthlings into ‘superheroes’!  That’s because ‘love’ is a ‘magical’ force!   But love can fizzle out!  Or, it can be hard to find! Or, you may not have encountered it yet.  Or, you may never find it!

Fairy-tale happily ever afters

Many people are looking for love and their fairy-tale happily ever after.  Are you one of those people?  Are you waiting for someone to sweep you off from your feet ‘Gone with the Wind’ style?     Or, are you wishing for a “When Harry met Sally” or “When Harry met Megan” magical moment!  Do you have your eye on someone who makes your heart skip a beat, your temperature rise and your spirits soar?  Do you fantasize about meeting your Mr or Mrs Right?  Do, you long to meet that special someone who “only has eyes for you”?  Are you tired of being a singleton like Bridget Jones?  Or, are you sick to death with the superficiality of online dating? Perhaps, you are in a relationship, but your love is being taken for granted or worst still not reciprocated.  Or, you may be in a happy relationship, but you may wrestle with your own insecurities.  Whatever, your circumstance it’s time to start anew.  Are you with me?

Learning to love yourself it is the “greatest love of all”

Do, you want a true and enduring love? Yes, I hear you emphatically exclaim! Well, ‘self-love’ is the answer to all your woes!  Self-love is a love that you can always rely on!  It won’t leave you when the going gets rough!  Or, runaway with a different or younger model!  It won’t stay with you out of necessity, fear or duty!  It won’t grow disillusioned! And, it won’t make promises to you that it is unable to keep!  As, Whitney Houston’s lyrics in her song: “Greatest Love of All” sagely says:

“Because the greatest
Love of all is happening to me
I found the greatest
Love of all inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all”

What does self-love mean?

What, is self-love?  What, does it mean?  Self-love is about placing yourself on a pedestal before any other person. Now, that statement may sound very selfish to some of you, but it is not!  It is about ‘respecting and cherishing’ yourself.  A great deal of you are in love with and love others but you may not feel or give this great gift to yourselves. Not many people are taught to love themselves!  Not many people love themselves either!  So, how can you love someone else so “truly, madly and deeply” but fail to love you?  Many individuals are guilty of this or do not even give it a second thought.  But, you should because by not loving yourself you are telling yourselves that you are unimportant and unworthy! Everyone is important and worthy, and everyone deserves to be ‘loved’ including you! However, if that is how you are treating yourself how can you expect others to treat you any better?  If you have high regard for yourself others are more likely to view you and treat you with high regard!  It’s the same with love!

Some crucial self-love fundamentals

  1. Respect yourself
  2. Develop and build your self esteem
  3. Accept yourself warts and all
  4. Be kind to yourself
  5. Be authentic
  6. Be honest with yourself
  7. Be assertive
  8. Be happy in your own company
  9. Be comfortable in your own skin
  10. Love ‘You’

What can self-love do for you?

When, you love yourself you gain a new appreciation for who you are.  You feel empowered!  You feel superb!  You feel freer and lighter!  You walk taller!  You smile more!  You do not allow people to take advantage of you!  You do not allow people to mistreat you!  You will not be happy with settling for second best in anything!  You will know your worth and you will not allow anyone to devalue you!

The greatest romance you can have is with yourself

The greatest romance you can have is with yourself!  Nonsense, you may be thinking!  She has gone stark raving mad!  It is impossible! I admit that it is a little bonkers, but it is possible, and it is something that you should seriously consider and embrace if you feel it will benefit you and you want to.

How do you make a start on your own ‘self-love story’?

To make a start on your own ‘self-love story’.  You can do the following things:

  1. Make a pledge that you will start ‘loving yourself’ when you are ready to.
  2. When, you have made that pledge tell yourself you love yourself every day and mean it.
  3. Ensure that you dedicate time for yourself to do what you enjoy on a weekly basis and do not let anyone, or anything get in the way of your ‘ME’ time.
  4. Write a sincere love letter to yourself occasionally and review the ones that you’ve written when you need an emotional boost.
  5. Buy yourself a beautiful bouquet of flowers on a regular basis.
  6. Dress nicely for yourself if you look good then you’ll feel good.
  7. Never rely on others to make you feel ‘special’ do that for yourself because you are very ‘special’

Are you ready to write a love letter to yourself today?

As, Oscar Wilde eloquently proclaimed:“To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance”.  Are you ready to begin a new life-long romance with yourself?  If you are why not write a love letter to yourself today?
