Stand at the Center of Your Life

Shift your perspective.

The Thrive Global Community welcomes voices from many spheres on our open platform. We publish pieces as written by outside contributors with a wide range of opinions, which don’t necessarily reflect our own. Community stories are not commissioned by our editorial team and must meet our guidelines prior to being published.

Stand at the center of your life. Check-in with all the things that are around you right now: career, relationships, family, friendships, home, finances, opportunities, etc. What is growing and what is draining?

The things that are draining, are they draining because your goals shifted and you have outgrown them, or are they draining because you are procrastinating or sabotaging? Think of whether it’s time to rework them, or to let them go.

Keep watering everything that is growing and lifts you up. Think of fresh ways to nurture them, be it a career move or a friendship that has become valuable recently.

What do you have now that you wished for six months ago? How have you progressed in the last month, three months, six months, one year, three years, five years, ten years? I bet you have.

This simple exercise helped me shift from seeing myself as a failure, when comparing to others, to a winning perspective when comparing to my own life. I looked back at what was happening ten years ago and the people that entered my life then. Some of them are still here, so I thanked them for their loyalty. Three years ago one of my best friends and I talked about living together. We do now. There are things that are flourishing in my career now that I talked about wanting them while still in college. Others are coming up that I set the intention this past New Year’s Eve. They are here. I am achieving goals that I forgot I had set. Some take longer, some are quicker.

This moved me to a place of gratitude and acceptance. It’s important to stand fully present as you achieve each step of your life and appreciate it. Thank yourself for the hard work and thank the people that have supported you along the way.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop to look around once in a while, you could miss it.” — Ferris Bueller
