6 Small Daily Steps That Help Me Avoid Teacher Burnout

There’s power in waking up and telling yourself, “Today will be a good day."

There were many strategies that I have utilized over the years to prevent me from feeling overwhelmed and burned out. Here are six that have especially helped me avoid stress:

1. I have supportive colleagues that I can vent to or talk with. 

2. I have moments when a good massage will take the stress away. 

3. There was a time when I would wake up and say aloud, “Today will be a good day.”

4. I always look forward to visits from former students to telling me how they are doing. In doing so, I remind myself that I may not see it yet, but later down the line, my teaching will benefit the students I teach.

5. I am one of those people who love planners and stationaries. I keep a list on a Post-It note in my planner, cross off what I have accomplished, and move the sticky note when needed. 

6. I follow teacher Facebook groups, Instagram, and Pinterests to find inspiration. Also, by being a part of Facebook groups, I feel that I am not alone in feeling the way I do, or feeling so defeated. I would tell new teachers to make it yours and don’t feel like you have to be Pinterest-perfect. 

Be you and be real with the kids. There are some days when it is what it is.
