As a mindful mama of three and an entrepreneur, I’ll tell you firsthand that I don’t wake up every morning feeling overjoyed and excited to take on the day. Any parent or human being who says they do is lying, however, there are many — like me — who have created a few tools for changing your mindset in the morning to set yourself up for a brighter, more optimistic and energetic day. Facing the day with exuberance and “Joie De Vivre” doesn’t mean waking up every morning with a wide-tooth grin plastered on your face, but turning to your morning rituals that keep you nourished, balanced and abundant.
No morning ever looks the same for me and most of the time, I’m grateful for it. I never feel stuck because my day is constantly changing — some mornings I’m up with the kids helping them get ready for school then there are other days I’m up early for an event, meeting or workout. Then, every so often there are magical mornings where I sleep in, move slowly through my daily rituals and snuggle up with my baby girl.
Bliss begins within, 100%. What I care about most of all is putting love and attention into the foods I eat and the ingredients I use so I can feel well-nourished and abundant both inside and out. I always make sure to have superfoods at least in some form every morning whether that’s through a superfood latte or in a morning smoothie.
When the mornings are a little more chaotic and stressful here’s how I ensure I always have a great day and face it with “Joie De Vivre.”
Set a morning intention.
I think one of the best things you can do to set your day up for success is setting an intention for the day. It could be as detailed or large and encompassing as you need it to be. Setting a morning intention will fuel your spirit and give you motivation for the day. If you want, you can write it down in a journal or on a post-it note and put it up on your mirror to channel the energy and fire you up for the day ahead.
Use Palo Santo to cleanse my home + sacred space.
Lighting some Palo Santo and cleansing your own energy or
your home is a beautiful way to stir up positive energy for the day. Taking even a moment to cleanse my sacred space sets my day up for success in the best way. It brings in so much abundance and light so I’m greeting every challenge I encounter for the day with a more positive outlook. I like to set my morning intention immediately after I cleanse my space. I feel so lifted and lighter even after doing these two small practices.
Essential oils are a POWERFUL way to instantly transform your mood and sense of being. I use juniper to instill peace, thyme and bergamot when I need to focus, and cloves and jasmine for creativity. Personally, I notice huge energetic shifts whenever I use essential oils. My mood is automatically transformed. For a busy mom, you hang on to little tricks that help keep you calm and centered.
Move my body.
I do everything from a place of love — which means working out because you actually love the movements that your body can do. Most times, this looks like holding my baby girl and dancing around our kitchen. Dancing and releasing your body from physical stress is so healing and you’re able to move the energy within and around you. Whatever you do, move your body at least once a day whether it’s a full blown workout, a walk around the neighborhood or a quickie yoga flow in your living room. Move your body because it feels good and healing.
Facing the day with positivity and bliss usually begins, for me, with expressing sincere gratitude. I take time each morning to run through a list of everything I have to be thankful for — sometimes I journal it out and sometimes I repeat it in my head as I’m moving through my other morning activities. Taking the time to even say one thing you’re thankful for — no matter how small — can dramatically affect your outlook on the day.
Fuel with nourishing foods + the nutrients my body needs
Above all, I start every single day with filling my body with nourishing and nutrient-dense foods. The moment I wake up, I sip on a glass of warm water with a slice of fresh lemon. After a long night of sleep, the body needs to hydrate and flush out the digestive system, which the burst of citrus helps to stimulate. Most mornings, I’ll then whip up a smoothie for a burst of protein, fiber, healthy fats, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and YUMMINESS! I love tossing fruits, leafy greens, coconut waters or nut milks, and Philosophie superfoods into a blender and having a filling, energizing smoothie ready in 5 minutes.
You are in control of how you approach your day. You are in control of your reaction to challenges that get in the way. So often we forget that and we get caught up in the moment, letting it take over, but if we only remember to breathe deeply and consciously — allowing your mind to settle into the moment — we will radiate with positivity. This life is yours and you deserve all the bliss, abundance and “Joie De Vivre.”
