Spring brings a fresh energy full of new life, growth and transformation…

It is a time for Spring cleaning…the desire to make your space fresh and new after a long winter season. The same principle can be applied to your diet.

During the winter we tend to eat heavier foods to balance out the cold, windy air. We also have a tendency to consume more food and drink that is often less healthy than usual.

The start of Spring is the perfect time to get a fresh start on your healthy eating. Here a few simple ways you can “Spring Clean” your diet to feel lighter, better and more energized for all the wonderful things this new season has in store for you!

DRINK MORE WATER & LESS ALCOHOL

Water keeps your digestion system moving — promoting detoxification, it gives you energy and keeps your skin hydrated and clear. Alcohol can disrupt your hormone balance, robs you of deep sleep, lowers metabolism and makes you hungrier. Be mindful of your alcohol intake this season, reducing it will help you feel lighter and better!

EAT MORE GREENS

I know this isn’t a new topic, however a gentle reminder never hurts. Greens like spinach, kale, arugula, romaine, Swiss chard and bok choy are full of nutrients essential for good health! And they have the perfect fresh, light energy for spring. Use them to make a nice big salad, sauté them lightly as a side dish or make this delicious Spring Energy Green Smoothie.

EAT MORE HERBS

Herbs like parsley and cilantro are full of antioxidants, promote detoxification and help maintain a healthy liver. A sluggish or fatty liver can affect weight gain, inflammation and hormone imbalance — to name a few. Give you liver some love by chopping up these herbs and getting them into your meals. I love them in salads, smoothies, guacamole, avocado toast, with rice or quinoa…the possibilities are endless. Try this Favourite Bean Salad.

EAT BREAKFAST

Eating a good, healthy breakfast sets you up for better eating and food choices throughout the day. Breakfast literally means “breaking the fast” from sleep. Starting your day with a warm bowl of oatmeal with berries or a nutritious green smoothie will give you energy to get through your morning without being ravenous mid morning or at lunch and reaching for something unhealthy. No time? These Healthy Granola Bars make a great breakfast to go!
