Our brains are just as important as our bodies and both function together with our soul. They must live in peace and harmony to attract the best things for us and achieve happiness.

I had the pleasure to interview Rita Casman. Rita is a live cartoon, headstrong entertainer and mental health advocate telling the truth for herself and for others. Giving back to the community goes hand in hand with her career.

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

I started making character voices and singing before I even started speaking at the age of 3. I always had the dream of becoming an Entertainer, however things would get in the way. After High School, I studied Communication and Design to pursue my creative side even though I had forgotten my true calling. When it was time to study my first Master’s Degree, after putting off my dream, I thought that I would have a normal life. Thanks to not being accepted for an MBA, I chose International Relations thinking “at least this” without having the slightest idea of how it would change my life. When I was little, I was always interested in helping others, but never thought about becoming a Philanthropist. Now I consider myself one, even though I’ve given more of my time that money. Philanthropy goes hand in hand with my career and it needs it. The final push that I needed to come here was when I worked with Carlos Argüello from Studio C and Fundacion CA. After getting to know him and his resume, I was reminded about my life purpose. I’m so lucky to have found that before I was 30. One night, I googled acting in LA and found The New York Film Academy. My dream was more than fulfilled because I was able to get a Master’s in Fine Arts in Acting for Film. After that, I completed my first film “Shadow Wall” which has obtained several awards and serves for Mental Advocacy, I started auditioning and I have continued taking several classes and workshops with the best people in the Industry. I’ll never forget the jump I did my just grabbing a few luggage cases and moving out to the US, being my first time on an Airplane in one of the biggest cities and getting adjusted to starting over again. I just knew it would work out.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started this career?

Number 3 has been very peculiar even since I landed out here. After 3 months of being in LA, I met my husband in a dating app and we got married 3 weeks after that. I’m currently in our Third year of marriage so let’s see what that brings out!

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

I take things literally most of the times. I remember when I started to go to Casting Director Workshops, I thought since it was class, I didn’t have to have my lines 100 percent…even though it’s for Educational Purposes only, the work goes so fast that I had to know them and with the nerves I would forget them. It was one CD that told me that and I felt like such a freshman, but it was ok because at least it wasn’t in front of the whole class!

What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now?

I really want to make my film either a feature or a series. I believe that the Entertainment Industry is also a form of Education and Awareness. I’m also developing a fashion film with a similar topic.

Who are some of the most interesting people you have interacted with? What was that like? Do you have any stories?

So many people, but these are some of them:

Christopher Meloni — I met him at a Q&A at the New York Film Academy in LA, I’ll never forget how funny and nice he is and how he mentioned that he would die for his career, which is the same attitude I have had ever since I began. I have a picture with him but I haven’t recovered it yet!

Bobby and Larry Chance — They both have taught me what Acting really is, how the lines just come to my characters. I met them at the right place and the right time. I became fearless with them.

Elizabeth Regen — She taught me how to get to my truth and say it.

Zora DeHorter — Zora made me an explorer of my lines, the “what if”. At her workshop, I really learned intensively how to be in the moment and I discovered acting true colors.

Bob Garrett — I’ve gone through a lot of things that have affected my true voice. Bob was able to show me the way out of my head and he took me by the hand — with his extraordinary patience and guidance — out of my dark places and found the light. Now I’m just working in the performance as a whole — singing and moving at the same time.

Eliza Jane — One of my dreams is Voiceover, Eliza is an eminence in this business. Her work is inspiring and a dream come true. Disney, here I come!

Sam Christensen — I had the honor of having this man in my life. I was able to intern at his studio for a few weeks and take his class. The process that I went through was amazing and I found myself once again, as well as discovering abilities that were unknown to me before. I was able to interpret my brand.

David Banks and David Rountree — This pair is extraordinary. I read David Banks Commercial Acting book, I loved it! He’s so friendly! David Rountree taught me how to act from my eyes.

Joseph Pearlman — He taught me to have fun! When acting becomes a job, we tend to forget to have fun. This is my passion and I learned a different approach to acting with Joseph’s acting technique.

Valorie Hubbard — Actor’s Fast Track taught me how to take charge of my career and work as a team with my representation. I am definitely attracting what I dream of! American Horror Story, here I come!

Dear Mama Sunny — Sunny was my first manager, now she offers Image Consultations. She helped me find my brand.

Carlos Argüello — This man is the reason why I came to LA. I had the pleasure of being his PR representative back in Guatemala. His life and career reminded me of my life purpose.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

Find a hobby: You need to vent with something and have fun with things that are unrelated to the business.

Give yourself a break: Vacays are a must, this is like any other job.

Take your time: This is not a horserace! The quality is very important.

You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

Mental Health: Our brains are just as important as our bodies and both function together with our soul. They must live in peace and harmony to attract the best things for us and achieve happiness.

Beauty comes in different sizes: There are different types of beauty. Self-love, confidence and a healthy lifestyle is required.

Abundance — There is enough for everyone: We can all prosper, it’s all about your mindset.

I will start a Foundation called “The True Vine” inspired on Saint Rita, whom I was named after. Her life story has inspired me to achieve the impossible. I will donate part of my income and from campaigns for different causes such as mental health, ovarian cancer, domestic violence, transcendental meditation, homelessness and many more. I will also partner up with other foundations and unite forces.

5 Things I Wish Someone Told Me When I First Started Acting/Directing/Performing/Hosting

  • You have no idea how challenging it will get: When you have a dream, even if you have hope. Faith and excitement and know that it will get hard, you have no idea until you’re in it. The reflection from a distance is really different, however if you have the courage to go for it, you’ll make it. Things always work out when they are meant to be. Don’t say “I will never ever” because you don’t know until you go through a journey.
  • Don’t trust your own strength by itself: We tend to think that we are strong enough because of all that we lived. You need a support system, in my case spirituality and therapy helps me go through things. Everybody goes through the hardest thing they can handle, never more. We are all different.
  • Never stop asking for help: You cannot do this alone. There’s always somebody we meet and have in our lives that supports us in some way.
  • Never stop asking for faith and hope: There will be times when everything is more than OK. Just as bad things never last forever, good things are not eternal. That’s how life works, it’s all about the journey. It’s how we grow, it’s what makes it interesting.
  • Don’t forget to keep trusting God and the Universe: We all believe in something. We don’t just exist. Find that higher power that you rely on and trust with all the things you have no control of.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

“It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible either” Rita in “Shadow Wall”. This quote was written by me as the tag for my first film. This applies to everybody. We can actually make it smooth and possible at the same time, you just need to trust the process of life and believe in yourself. This requires confidence and self-love.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

There are so many people, I chose the closest ones to me:

Husband: Jordan has supported me in every way that I can possibly imagine even though he doesn’t fully understand my calling. I think that I met him at the right time.

Mom: We are just a WhatsApp call away. Even though she has her own problems, she always knows how to listen and give me advice.

Amah and Godfather: They both helped me financially to come to LA and have always been a very important part of my life.

Friends and Family: It’s too many people, what I can tell you is that I always have someone available to talk to and hear positive things from.

Some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might see this. 🙂

Wow, I have so many people I’d love to have breakfast with — it’s my favorite meal of the day. I chose a few, a love meeting new people!

Chuck Lorre, Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, Ava DuVernay, Tina Fey, Tim Burton, Ben Stiller, Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Inarritu, James Wan, Duplass Brothers, Seth Rogen, and the Kehoe Brothers.

All of them are either in comedy, horror, or a mix of both which fall into my brand. I also want to act in Spanish and show my Latina roots.
