I would want to start a movement that gave as many middle school and high school age kids as possible access to music education. There are so many schools with no music programs or very poor resources for their music programs. I think music education should be as important as any other subject.
I had the pleasure of interviewing Karina Rae. Karina(@itskarinarae), a 19 year old Pop singer from Boston, MA. After releasing a cover on YouTube in 2014, the singer would rack up over 1 million views in less than a year as she cultivated a faithful and devout online following. Karina has then been performing all across the U.S. Backed by guitar, bass, drums, and keys, she captivates crowds with an undeniable live presence and natural charisma.
Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?
I was singing before I could speak. If you don’t believe me, there’s home video proof! I would perform at every school talent show since elementary school. Then, my mom realized this was serious now. I started performing everywhere and anywhere I could. From malls, to schools, and even zoo’s. This would lead to me eventually finishing my High School Career online to seriously pursue music.
Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started this career?
I’d say, the most interesting story so far is when I was introduced to the world of social media. That took my career, and career perspective to a whole new level. I was dedicated to my brand ever since.
Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?
I became traumatized once I forgot to introduce MY BAND while on tour a handful of times. I now know, never forget the band.
What are some of the most interesting or exciting projects you are working on now?
I’m working on a TON of exciting new things. I’ll finally be releasing new music this year along with visuals and merch. Woohoo!
Who are some of the most interesting people you have interacted with? What was that like? Do you have any stories?
I’ve met a lot of characters while pursuing this career. I once had a writer I was working with practically give me a therapy session in order to help me create a song. It was long, intense but some great art was formed from it after.
Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?
I always tell people who are pursuing this kind of career to understand that they will consistently fall in and out of love with what they do. Although we’re creating a passion from our talent, it’s still extremely easy for the road to get tough.
You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂
If I had to choose only one movement, I would want to start a movement that gave as many middle school and high school age kids as possible access to music education. There are so many schools with no music programs or very poor resources for their music programs. I think music education should be as important as any other subject.
What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why. Please share a story or example for each.
Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?
“Mother knows best.” This one is pretty self explanatory. My mom is (for the most part) ALWAYS right.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?
I’ve met and worked with a ton of people who have helped me grow as an artist and as an entertainer. From songwriters, to performance coaches and vocal coaches. However, I’d say the person who has had the MOST influence on the person I am today is my mom. I would not have the strength and dedication I have now if it weren’t for my mom.
Some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might see this. 🙂
I’m not much of a morning person so I would definitely choose lunch! One of the artist I admire most is Beyoncé. I would love to have lunch with her and ask her about what inspires her and how she handles the challenges of this industry.
