Priyanka Chopra: Knowing You Don’t Have to Stay Broken Is Empowering

“No one can tell you what you can or cannot achieve.”

When you have the opportunity to ask some of the most interesting people in the world about their lives, sometimes the most fascinating answers come from the simplest questions. The Thrive Questionnaire is an ongoing series that gives an intimate look inside the lives of some of the world’s most successful people.

Thrive Global: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed?

Priyanka Chopra: Guilty! I check my phone! Although, for the past two weeks, I’ve been checking on Diana first thing. Diana is the lil’ pup I just adopted.

TG: What gives you energy?
PC: An interesting day.

TG: What’s your secret life hack?
PC: I dance to the beat of my own drum. It’s fun to discover every day as a new day. No one can tell you what you can or cannot achieve. I respond to reason.

TG: Tell us about your relationship with your phone. Does it sleep with you?               PC: It’s complicated!

TG: How do you deal with email?
PC: I’m old-school… If you need me, call me. Why is everyone always emailing?! Ok, I sound old. I tackle them usually in between shots while filming and in order of priority… but I would be lying if I told you that my unread email count is at 0. It’s at 25,000. Sorry! Call me.

TG: You unexpectedly find 15 minutes in your day, what do you do with it?                 PC: It’s VERY rare, but when I have it… I sleep.

TG: When was the last time you felt burned out?
Three years ago. I was shooting non-stop, not sleeping, traveling for work, and pretty much unable to get even an hour to myself. But it’s nothing a little beach R&R can’t cure! Two weeks later, problem solved!

TG: Share a quote that gives you strength when times are tough.
PC: Selena Gomez really inspired me with her acceptance speech at the AMAs over the weekend. She said, “If you are broken, you don’t have to stay broken.” I think this perspective is something that we can all learn from and gain strength from when we find ourselves in situations that test our heart, mind, body, or general well-being. Knowing that you don’t have to stay broken is empowering.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
