It’s normal for a President to ask his advisors for input on policy. What’s not so normal is asking for that input in the dead of night, from an advisor who’s not an expert on the policy in question.

The Huffington Post has reported a leak describing how Trump recently called his national security adviser, the retired Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, at 3 a.m. (according to Flynn) to ask whether a strong dollar or a weak dollar was better for the U.S economy. The report also said that Flynn, a counterintelligence expert, told Trump he should consult an economist.

As we’ve written about before, Trump is open about the fact that he doesn’t get much sleep, sometimes only four hours a night. He’s known to tweet in the early a.m. hours, and making potentially important calls when the rest of us are sleeping is concerning. Research tells us that sleep is necessary for lucid, rational decision making, like deciding on the best person to consult about a particular topic.

Read more about the 3 a.m. call and reactions from both outside sources and Trump’s staff on The Huffington Post.
