Today we will talk about the importance of waking up and finding out what it feels like to be alive and know what our purpose is in this world when we are off the clock from work.
How many times have you felt that you were chasing something just because society made you think it was the right thing to do? For me, I was in those shoes a year ago chasing a path that was externally gratifying but left me blindly chasing an invisible summit I was helplessly thrust into. The tricky part is that there are so many of us externally “crushing it” with many people admiring us we wouldn’t even know; however, the positive external signals actually stagnate our motivation, growth, and hide the leash under which our freedom is enslaved.
The issue is not with the corporate world or the beautiful society we were born into. The issue is that I internally created a mindset that enslaved myself to pleasing other people, focusing on the next destination, being comfortable, and fearing failure. Because I was blending in so well with society’s expectations, I completely numbed out and lost sight of who I really was and what sparked me. For me, it became deeply unsatisfying and unsustainable to go through life on autopilot chasing the next destination on society’s path to success.
The good news is that life doesn’t have to stay this way. You have options that you can choose going forward.
The first step is to seek out like-minded people who genuinely want the best for you. These positive tribal warriors will be kind, compassionate people that have a natural curiosity for how the world works. They are the ones that you can count on to fight for whatever is important, like your happiness and well-being, and they will express a compelling desire to think about the world in terms of, “What if…?”
Once you have identified these positive tribal warriors, the next step is to invite them to spend time with you so you can unearth activities that you enjoy doing together. Some ideas that you may want to consider include:
- 15 minute chats to discuss what each person is working on to spark each other’s creative energy
- Collaboratively writing a daily blog post or producing a video
- Creating meaningful get-togethers to sponsor a community service event
- Trading talents with another person to teach and learn a new skill
- Setting a goal to exercise or participate on a team sport together
You will quickly discover that once you find activities that you enjoy doing with another person, you both win because you will find fulfillment when you do meaningful, purposeful things with them. At the same time, you will also maintain and value the other person’s unique differences that draw you together and allow you to thrive as an authentic individual.
The best part about this is that all these action steps can all fit into extracurricular activities when you are not working. Whether you are an entrepreneur or corporate star, you have the power to engage in these activities in your free time that will allow you to get closer to finding your authentic self while enhancing your freedom, fulfillment, and enjoyment on your journey. It is mandatory to give your job or business 120% dedication when you are working, but when you aren’t it is essential you find ways to feel alive with meaningful enjoyment for yourself and others.
Once I created my foundations, habits, routines surrounding myself with my positive purpose tribal warriors, I was able to achieve mental and physical peak performance every day. Regardless of the next step of my journey whether that’s working an overnight shift at JFK airport, working 18 hours a day as an investment banking analyst, or working 9-6 at a corporation, I will thrive because I know I can sustain happiness through fulfillment and freedom every day with the people in my life while spreading fulfillment and purpose to others!
