Other Than a Counselor on a Spaceship, What Professions Do Empaths Usually Choose?

Are empaths sacrificing salaries and comfort by following their hearts?

Deanna Troi sketch

If you used to watch Star Trek and exclaimed on more than one occasion, “Oh, my God, she is so right!” while Deanna Troi was stating her opinion and offering advice, you are probably more than keen on applying for one of the positions we have in mind.

It’s no mean feat being an empath. On the one hand, the feeling you get after helping your fellow citizens is more than rewarding and fills you up with pride. On the other, being able to understand everyone’s’ motives and sense their unhappy feelings can become a real burden and cause anxiety, or even depression. You also don’t have to sacrifice earning a high salary for pittance. Striking the right balance between these two is of utmost importance. Fortunately, there are plenty of jobs to choose from and you’ll be surprised just how versatile all of them are. So let’s take a look!

Writer

You don’t have to be in direct touch with people and their mishaps – you can simply invent them! Indeed, empaths take great pleasure in understanding how a person feels which makes them highly skilled when it comes to defining a character.

Musician

They really know how to strike a chord sometimes, don’t they? Beyonce is an empath, too. How else do you explain all those album sales? The ability to connect with the audience and provide comfort through singing or playing an instrument (or dancing) is so exhilarating that musicians have a hard time letting go of such an exciting lifestyle.

Community counselor

Assisting in the community center isn’t necessarily reserved only for those with speeding tickets. If you’re really keen on helping people and getting the first-hand experience, consider becoming a community center counselor. This will give you the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, so suffice it to say, there is never a dull moment. You will be working with people of different ages and will be making a profound impact on their lives.

There are lots of career prospects here, too, since a proper counselor is always needed in all corners of the Earth. It’s always a good idea to obtain a qualification from reputable educational institutions such as The International Career Institute in the US, Open Colleges in Australia or Community Care in the UK.

Veterinarian

Who says it’s only people you feel compassion for? Empaths are very sensitive when it comes to animals as well. Admit it. Becoming an animal doctor has crossed your mind on more than one occasion, but you shook it off for one reason or the other. This also is a noble profession, so if you prefer animals to people (at times), being a vet may be your future calling. Alternatively, you could become a pet groomer and also have a lot of fun at work.

Landscape designer

On the other hand, if being on an emotional rollercoaster isn’t really your thing, there are a number of opportunities which can let you be at peace with yourself. For instance, you could become a gardener, or a landscape designer. Nature is extremely beneficial for empaths and gives them great comfort and recovery from the people’s feelings and desires.

Yoga instructor

There’s more to yoga than meets the eye, isn’t there? Being really flexible and strong is a must, but this is for all those who are fit, but hate powerlifting. Also, the whole philosophy beyond yoga is helping others, and yogis have been doing that for centuries.

Clergy

What better job for an empathic man or woman than to become a member of the clergy? There are so many stories to hear, so many people to help, waiting to be offered understanding and support ( and at times, forgiveness, too). Isn’t it the greatest gift one can give to another human being?

Life coach

In a way, priests belong to the category, too. So, in case you’re an atheist or your love for God isn’t that strong, fear not. You can still preach to people and get good money for it. While in the old days the profession used to be mocked, nowadays everybody understands the value of a good life coach.

Last but not least, let us tell you which professions empaths should stay away from. First of all, whatever has something to do with shopping and sales should be avoided at all costs. Empaths are highly sensitive beings, and pushing people is something they shy away from. Also, being a lawyer won’t bring much satisfaction either.

To summarize, there are lots of jobs out there for hard-working empaths. What’s more, they are so different that the phrase “there is something for everyone” really rings true here.
