A person diagnosed with stress experiences over-reactive emotions while blunted emotions are the hallmarks of burnout. A sense of urgency and hyperactivity is common with stress. With burnout, the patient ends up feeling helpless and hopeless.

Loss of energy is a common complaint among people struggling with stress. Loss of hope, ideals and motivation is common among those diagnosed with burnout. Stress often leads to anxiety disorders while the result of burnout tends to be depression and detachment.

Stress damages the physical wellbeing of the patient. Burnout damages the emotional being. As for stress, premature death is never far off the mark. On the other hand, life becomes something not worth pursuing or living for people struggling with burnout.

Dangers of Burnout

Burnout can make you lose interest in some of the things and people that matter greatly to you. It is possible to develop an uncaring attitude towards loved ones, friends, workmates and schoolmates. Your studies, productivity at work and parental responsibilities could suffer greatly. If burnout remains untreated for long, it could eventually lead to burnout syndrome. Lack of progress in whatever you do becomes the norm when burnout continues unabated. People who struggle with burnout more than others include the following:

•             managers

•             entrepreneurs
