On an episode of the Thrive Global Podcast with iHeartRadio, Neil deGrasse Tyson — astrophysicist and author — sat down with Arianna Huffington to discuss the importance of taking the time to look up at the night sky instead of down at your smartphone.

Why take the time to look up at the sky? As deGrasse Tyson says, creativity is inspired by technology free moments. “Let’s go back to when Newton comes up with his theory of gravity,” deGrasse Tyson says, “So the apple falls. Suppose he was looking at a smartphone instead of watching the apple fall—we’d have never had the theory of gravity!”

deGrasse Tyson encourages us all to not miss moments of creativity because we’re distracted by “the infusion of technology in our lives.”

His key to living a life filled with imagination and innovation? “Be less productive.” In an always-on digital world, make sure you take the time to step away from technology. Perhaps it will lift you to new heights.
