The new coronavirus pandemic has changed a lot of things, especially our perspective on life. Before the COVID-19 breakout, you had a job, your kids were at school, you had a normal life. However, suddenly, you were asked to work from home for months and you started considering that maybe this job is not right for you anymore. Or, in a worst-case scenario, the pandemic took your job. So, what can you do now?

Making a Career Pivot

Changing careers is never easy but it is far more common nowadays than it was just a decade ago. Some companies do not offer the same stability to employees or they provide fewer benefits, so  employees aren’t motivated to work for the same employer for a long time.

If you are thinking that you need to switch careers, it is wise to consider why you are considering this change.   Here are some of the common motivating factors for a career change.

You Want To Earn More Money

This may well be the factor that is motivating you. Whether you lost your job and you need to find a new career pivot or you’re just not happy with your current job because the company doesn’t pay well, money is one of the main motivating forces. However, if this is the case, when you change careers, you may earn less money than you are earning now. But you can always increase your value by developing new skills, education, and experience.

Your Industry/Function Is Shrinking

If this is the factor that is motivating you, you need to look at careers that are in demand.  Determine what skills and experience you have that can add value in these potential careers.  Consider the skills you need and take a class or training to add additional value to your role in the company.

You Want To Follow A Passion

Some people discover late in life that their job is no longer fulfilling. It is not a matter of money, the number of hours they spend at the office, or anything else. The old job is just not satisfying.

You need to discover what your passion is and start developing the skills you need to pursue it.  What interests do you have?  What skills in your current job do you love?  What did you want to be when you were ten years old?  Reflect on these questions to help you find a new path.

You Want Your Job To Have A Greater Impact On The World

More and more people are looking to do meaningful things for others.  Many people are looking to make an impact in the world or in their job that affects others.   You are looking for something that makes your heart warm by the product or service provided in your employment.  These could be working in renewable energy or a nonprofit in the community to name a couple.

You Want To Be On Your Own

Many people are simply tired of the same schedule week after week, commuting, or even reporting to their bosses. So, you may consider becoming your own boss.  You find ways to become an entrepreneur or a consultant working out of your house and offering your expertise to people or companies.

Bottom Line

Ultimately, you need to figure out what is motivating you to make a career pivot. Only when you know the real reason, will you be able to see the alternatives that you have.

If you still want to proceed, you need to consider your natural advantages such as your strengths, ability to problem solve, and handle adversities.

Above all, you give your career pivot the importance it deserves.   Make sure to take advantages of your network and do your field research to find your path and opportunities.  You may not know people in the new industry as you look to transfer your skills and knowledge, but you have the desire, the goal, and the right motivators on your side to make the change.

Be in action each day to make your pivot.
