I had the pleasure to interview Jacqui Holland Govea. Jacqui is a matchmaker, dating coach and the founder of I Deserve Love. Her mission to help people find deep, authentic love through self-empowerment has taken her across the country, speaking on panels. As a social media influencer, she uses her platform to educate and inspire singles to be the best version of themselves, in order to attract their perfect match. Based in Los Angeles, CA the former Hollywood actress works with clients all over the United States, including NY, Dallas, Miami, and Chicago.

Thank you so much for joining us! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

After spending about a decade in the Hollywood scene, I realized that there had to be something more fulfilling in life. Although I adored acting for a living, the Hollywood lifestyle had begun to take a toll on my heart. I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do with my life, but I knew I wanted to help people. So, I kind of did a little soul searching looking for ways not just to help heal myself, but to help others. I’m just addicted to learning and have a bit of a secret studious personality, so I somehow ended up with all these certifications. From Hypnotherapist to Yoga Instructor to studying for a PHD, I just found all of these answers I had been searching for. I started to heal the hole in my soul and was able to find love. Naturally, my advice turned into coaching and I quickly realized how much I truly enjoyed helping people find something that had always eluded me. Living in Los Angeles, I had been on so many first dates that I had a lot to say. One thing led to another and within a few years I had founded I Deserve Love.

Can you share your story of Grit and Success? First can you tell us a story about the hard times that you faced when you first started your journey?

It was funny, when I first started my company, I was pregnant and needed something I could do from home, because I just can’t imagine my life without some meaningful work. So, I started my company with only one client. He was a very successful man whose wife had passed away a few years back. I literally scouted the internet and beyond, trying to find him a match. I remember doing skype interviews with women when I was 9 months pregnant and cropping my belly out of the frame as we talked. Hahaha. But, I was so determined to make it work and continue to expand my business. My husband still laughs at me because I took client phone calls while I was in labor. Needless to say, it was definitely a challenge.

Where did you get the drive to continue even though things were so hard?

Somehow, I’ve always been stuck on overdrive. I think I get my crazy work ethic from my dad, or possibly from being a Taurus. We’re known for not giving up, so it takes a lot for me to quit when I’m passionate about accomplishing something.

So, how are things going today? How did Grit lead to your eventual success?

Things are going really, well. I’ve managed to make a footprint in a competitive industry as a successful National Matchmaking Agency with some amazing success stories. We’re in the middle of launching a new online program called “I Deserve Love Academy.” You can trust that it’s been a lot fourteen hour days and it’s definitely not easy juggling being a new mom, but I’m doing what I love and being my own boss, so that just makes me extremely happy!

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

I remember I was still breastfeeding when I first started my company and I was like, “I can totally do a skype call and breastfeed at the same time.” I was wearing this blanket, coverup thing and on skype interviewing someone. Needless to say, it did not work!

What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?

I think the thing that sets my company apart from other matchmakers or matchmaking companies in general, is I genuinely care. More than anything, my team and I really want to help people find exactly what they’re looking for. Whether it’s a long term partnership to see where things can go or a potential marriage match, the core mission is to help singles find a deep authentic love.

Which tips would you recommend to your colleagues in your industry to help them to thrive and not “burn out”?

The tip I’d definitely give to other matchmakers is to believe. I’m a super positive person, and it has definitely helped! If you believe you can find someone love and they believe you can help them, together you can manifest an amazing partner for a client! It’s all about being open to the possibilities.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?

It’s so true that to get where you want to be, you definitely need help to get there.

For me, my husband was very supportive. I had recently started working at another matchmaking agency and spoke to a lot of unhappy clients. To be honest I wasn’t congruent with the way they ran their business and it was really hard for me to work for a company that put most of their focus on profits instead of helping their clients find love.

I would tell my husband about my day, and tell him I knew I could do it better. He believed in me and helped me reach for my own potential. In under two years, I had a successful Matchmaking agency with a solid reputation, and I know my husband is a big part of my success.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I truly want to help as many people as possible find an amazing, healthy relationship and I do my best everyday to make that happen!

When building a company you have to develop grit. My advice would be to be honest with yourself. Know that when starting a company, you are going to work 12–14 hour days. It’s also understanding that certain things may have to take a backseat. Big, fancy and lengthy vacations or expensive lunches sometimes have to go first.

Also, my advice would be to build friendships, because you’re going to need help at certain times and it’s best to have friends not enemies.

You are a person of great influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

I’d love to help inspire as many people as possible. As a collective were a bit negative, so if I could help to inspire people to believe in themselves and the magic that is possible when you have that faith, well, that would be amazing!

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
