“Phone calls were last person to call gets your attention first.”

With Nina

When you have the opportunity to ask some of the most interesting people in the world about their lives, sometimes the most fascinating answers come from the simplest questions. The Thrive Questionnaire is an ongoing series that gives an intimate look inside the lives of some of the world’s most successful people.

Thrive Global: What’s the first thing you do when you get out of bed?
Martin Varsavsky: Pee.

TG: What gives you energy?
MV: Building companies that change the world, like Fon, the world’s largest Wi-Fi network; or Prelude, which helps people have healthy babies when they are ready.

TG: What’s your secret life hack?
MV: Nina.

TG: Tell us about your relationship with your phone. Does it sleep with you?
MV: Yes, but it is in airplane mode through the night.

TG: How do you deal with email?
MV: People complain about email, but I am so happy the phone call era is over. At least on email there’s an order. Phone calls were last person to call gets your attention first.

TG: You unexpectedly find 15 minutes in your day, what do you do with it?
MV: Go for a walk.

TG: When was the last time you felt burned out?
MV: What burns me out are road shows to raise money. I have one of those every three years, and I find them absolutely exhausting.

TG: Share a quote that gives you strength when times are tough.
MV: A great leader is somebody whose followers THRIVE.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
