If I were a person of enormous influence, and I could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people would be based on the idea of mental health. As a person who has gone through mental health challenges, I know just how damaging being mentally unstable can be. Knowing just how much mental instability can impact one’s efficiency, self-esteem, and confidence I want to do my part in helping people accept their differences and not let those specific characteristics get in the way of their success.

As part of my series about “companies and organizations making an important social impact, I had the pleasure of interviewing Lydia Moreno. Lydia is a graduating senior from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and the Vice President of Sales for Pure Serenity, a JA Company from the South Florida region which won 2nd place in the 2019 JA Company of the Year competition at the National Student Leadership Summit.

Thank you so much for doing this with us Lydia! Can you tell us a story about what brought you to this specific career path?

At the beginning of the school year, I had only heard about the amazing stories and companies that have arisen from the participation of past generations in such a wonderful program. I must admit that going into this year I knew I was going to have very big shoes to fill, and I was honestly very curious to see if my personal skillset would be able to fill those shoes, or maybe even over fill them. I started off as a girl who was insecure and unsure of her skillset, but after going through the experience of meeting challenges and overcoming them not just by myself but with my entire team by my side, I am so proud that I can now say that I am more confident in my skillset than ever before. My participation in the JA Company program has not only enhanced my skillset, but it has also expanded it to a level that I did not even think was possible. The JA Company program has taught me how to be more open minded, how to work as a team member, how to be creative, how to solve problems in a limited amount of time and so many more skills that I know I will for sure use in the future, whether it may be while I’m in college or when I am hopefully running a business of my own.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you began leading your company?

The most interesting story that has happened to me since I began leading specifically in the sales department is when I had to manage my first sales event and give my first sales pitch. Since the early beginnings of my high school career I have had my mind set on studying hospitality in the future; however, I was never given the opportunity to truly test and explore my strengths and weaknesses and how they would apply in the real world. giving my first sales pitch and managing the first sales event for Pure Serenity gave me more insight towards my personal skill set my capabilities and my passions. The strength of that ‘aha’ moment is what I believe to be the most interesting feeling and experience that I had throughout this entire journey.

Can you share a story about the funniest mistake you made when you were first starting? Can you tell us what lesson you learned from that?

I find it quite ironic how the mistake that I am about to describe was probably one of the most stress provoking mistakes that I’ve made throughout this journey, but I do have to say that looking back at it forces me to chuckle a little bit. I was vice President of sales one of my main tasks was to assign jobs to the employees that would be attending our sales events from who would be giving our sales pitches to would be managing inventory to who would be managing the money in the finances at that particular event. Most of the events had actually been running pretty smoothly however for one particular event which happened to be one of our biggest events (we would be selling at a Florida Panther’s Hockey Game) I let my guard down a little bit after seeing kind of how well all the other events had been going. As a consequence for not being as organized as I should have been resulted in is misplacing one of our money bags with hundreds of dollars inside. Although we were lucky enough to find it and retrieved it, it definitely left an impact on the way I managed myself and my team. It was probably the most stressful week of the entire experience as the VP of Sales, and the simple thought of me going through that along with my team members makes me so grateful that in the end everything worked.

Can you describe how your organization is making a significant social impact?

As far as social impact, we provide our customers with a healthy, simple, and convenient way to maintain well-being and reduce stress, through the power of aromatherapy and our special blend of essential oils. In line with our mission, we have proudly contributed over $1,000 to Parkland Cares, a non-profit organization that provides local resources to help our community cope with tragedy.

Wow! Can you tell me a story about a particular individual who was impacted this cause?

One customer reached out to us through Facebook expressing how one of her family members was going through a really traumatic experience. Although she did not disclose any details about the severity itself, she emphasized how our product was helping her cope with the overwhelming amounts of stress and anxiety she had to deal with; and for that, she was eternally grateful.

Are there three things the community/society/politicians can do help you address the root of the problem you are trying to solve?

A few things our community or society can do to help us address the root of the problem we are trying to solve is promote aromatherapy as a whole and make other methods of coping with stress and anxiety more accessible.

How do you define “Leadership”? Can you explain what you mean or give an example?

Personally, leadership is the ability to inspire others to support, to take action and to reach a goal in an effective and organized manner. For instance, our president did a spectacular job at motivating our fellow classmates to participate in our company in a way that was organized but still emphasized the value of each employee. It is because of her leadership that we were able to impact our community on a large scale in a short amount of time.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could inspire a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Can you share how that was relevant to you in your life?

My favorite life lesson quote is ‘it always seems impossible until it’s done.’ This quote is often and continues to be expressed to me by my mom. The meaning of this quote has never been more relevant in my life than in my high school career. I can say with full confidence that this quote has gotten me through most of the obstacles that I have faced in my life, whether it may be academic, extracurricular, or personal problems; and I can also say that it will continue to be my life quote for the years to come. This quote serves as a reminder that I can do anything I set my mind to; and although it may seem unachievable at the time, perseverance and hard work will get me through.

Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this, especially if we tag them. 🙂

If I could have a private breakfast with any person in the world it would be Walt Disney. His moral and determination to give anyone and everyone true happiness and love will always be inspiring to me. although his physical body is currently not with us I always try my very best to keep his principles close to my heart.

People look for retreats for themselves, in the country, by the coast, or in the hills . . . There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind. . . . So constantly give yourself this retreat, and renew yourself.
