Making Room: Housing for a Changing America explores cutting-edge typologies (micro-units, co-housing, and beyond) through case studies and the presentation of The Open House — a configurable, 1,000-square-foot home featuring a hyperefficient layout, movable walls, and multifunctional furniture, allowing the space to meet the needs of a variety of today’s growing but underserved households.

The National Building Museum will also host educational programming and panel discussions to address issues of housing disparity and the national housing crisis. Organized by the museum and the Citizens Housing & Planning Council and presented in partnership with Resource Furniture and Clei with generous support by the AARP Foundation, the ten-month exhibit opens on November 18 in Washington, D.C. Ceramics of Italy is delighted to be sponsoring the exhibition, along with in-kind donations of beautiful Italian tiles from member companies: Ceramica Vogue, Gruppo Romani, Emilgroup, Tagina and Ceramiche Caesar. Carefully selected to mirror the modern yet tactile design Italian architect Pierluigi Colombo has envisioned for the space, while demonstrating the latest designs and technical advancements, the collections will showcase the variety and versatility of Italian tile products. Tiles that mimic natural materials such as wood, anthracite and terracotta-cement designs will be used with a range of detail and sizes that vary from 8×48” planks to elongated subway tiles. Bringing it all together, Mapei will contribute mortars, grouts, and sealants, as well as a surface preparation product for the exhibition.
