Today I am writing about a time in my career that I felt overwhelmed and how it prompted me to make a change.

Working in corporate or in any organization, we are at the mercy of the leaders above us. If we have great leaders directly above us, life is good. When you’re newer in your career, having a great boss is critical to your future success.

While I’ve had many good bosses since I began working at the age of 15, I unfortunately had 2 terrible bosses in a row in the corporate world.

As someone who is passionate about the field I work in (digital marketing), it became frustrating day in and day out to have a boss who didn’t support the team’s best interests and constantly found ways to make their employees unhappy.

Working for bad bosses can have a deep impact on your personal joy. We spend more hours with those we work with than most other people in our lives.

At a point in early 2017, I was hired to work with South Gables Dental and another small company as my first two clients. I decided to leave my corporate job and start my own internet marketing company.

Entrepreneurship certainly has it’s challenges

Here a few challenges I’ve experienced as an entrepreneur:

  1. My first year in business I didn’t know what I was doing in regards to: taxes, accounting, negotiation, contracts, how to get clients
  2. I made very little money my first year in business
  3. I learned that contracts are a must after having a few clients steal work
  4. I didn’t know my niche
  5. I didn’t have case studies, data, or reasons why a company should hire my company for their internet marketing
  6. I felt aimless each day, no one was telling me what projects I needed to accomplish
  7. Time management was a real skillset to learn

Despite the above, after the first year things got much better. I started finding people I loved working with and industries that I’m passionate about helping.

6 Reasons I Became an Entrepreneur

  1. I love the idea of creating something from nothing.
  2. I learned that entrepreneurs are some of the bravest, strongest, battle-tested people – Entrepreneurs are what have built this country
  3. It’s extremely challenging yet very rewarding
  4. As an entrepreneur, you get to work with some amazing clients
  5. Entrepreneurs set their own rules
  6. Loyalty doesn’t exist working for someone else, especially corporate

Final Thoughts

In conclusion, becoming an entrepreneur in early 2017 was one of the most challenging endeavors I’ve ever undertaken. But now that I passed the difficult first two years of learning, entrepreneurship is fun and rewarding! I can’t imagine working for another company again.
