Exercise stops us from being infirm. It is so important to live out our lives happy, and fully functional, and exercise helps us do that by keeping our muscles active and our minds clear. Active bodies have more energy which heals the energy around our bodies, stagnant bodies have low energy. We can all feel that.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Nancy Smithers. Nova Scotia Organics began over 20 years ago by Founder, President, and 7th generation Nova Scotian Nancy Smithers. Nancy has dedicated her life to her passion for helping people become their healthiest selves. Nancy began Nova Scotia Organics right on her own kitchen table remarking, “The kitchen looked like a disaster area, with herbs and dirt all over everything.” Her dedication to making the highest quality, organic products soon blossomed into a leading company built on the high-quality ingredients and transparency of their products and what they put in them. A standout in the organic supplements category, the majority of the vitamins and minerals used come directly from top quality, organic food sources. Only what is vital for production is used in the supplements meaning no synthetics, no fillers, no chemicals.

Armed with her background in organics and a passion for healthy, clean ingredients, Nancy has set out to educate people on the benefits of clean eating, and the importance of avoiding chemicals and genetically modified foods. After years in the industry, she noticed a striking lack of transparency in the natural and organic industry and has fought to keep NSO completely transparent. When you take a vitamin or supplement from Nova Scotia Organics, you know exactly what you are putting in your body.

Motivated by the belief that what you put into your body is what fuels your well-being, NSO continues to innovate and expand their line of organic products.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! Our readers would love to “get to know you” a bit better. Can you share with us the story about how you first got involved in fitness and wellness?

Ihave always been physically active. When I was pregnant, I went to exercise classes daily and have continued that throughout my life. My sister Jane, a physiotherapist, who spent many years in the ashrams in India and who was one of the early users of natural products, asked me to begin to formulate products for her. She was unable to find anything on the shelves that met her high standards for quality. Our entire family took Evening Primrose Oil, vitamins and minerals every night at her behest long before it was popular. She even had my father invest in a company that began the manufacturing of Evening Primrose Oil in Canada. It has always been a part of my life.

Can you share the most interesting story that happened to you since you started your career?

When I first started to manufacture herbal products, I decided to grow the herbs. I did not have a clue what the seedlings looked like so I filled a tray with soil and then put so many seeds of one kind in the tray so I would know what was coming up was the herb I wanted. (I have many interesting stories). The first products I manufactured were herbal tinctures. My first CHFA trade show, I went outfitted in my Nova Scotia tartan kilt and my new line of herbal tinctures, very confident that I would sell out. I didn’t sell one bottle and my entrepreneurial body was shaken to the core, however, I did find a distributor and that started me going.

Can you share a story with us about the most humorous mistake you made when you were first starting? What lesson or takeaway did you learn from that?

When I was at the first trade show, I was asked what was so good or different about my products. I was not expecting this type of question because as far as I was concerned, I had the best product in the world. After that, I realized even though I knew how amazing my products were, I had to make sure I knew how to let everyone else know, too!

Can you share with our readers a bit about why you are an authority in the fitness and wellness field? In your opinion, what is your unique contribution to the world of wellness?

Over the past 25 years, I have devoted myself to producing only certified organic quality products because I felt that if you were going to be healthy, why would you put chemicals in your body? I have spent years sourcing the best ingredients and have traveled to the countries and the manufacturers to see and learn more about their process. When I was growing my own herbs and making tinctures, I used the method from the Pharmacopeias and relied on their markers. But then I decided I wanted to make sure my products had the markers and that I was extracting the medicinal ingredients properly. So for 6 years I partnered with NRC and did medicinal ingredient testing on my herbal tinctures. I wasn’t happy selling something I did not know was scientifically correct. My contribution is a full line of quality certified organic dietary supplements that are plant-sourced except for our eggshell calcium.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story about that?

The employees who have stuck with me have helped so much. My general manager, Jeremy, has helped me tremendously in the last few years. But like many entrepreneurs, I had to rely on myself much of the time. People have come and gone but it has been my own tenacity which has allowed me to survive.

Ok thank you for all that. Now let’s move to the main focus of our interview. We all know that it’s important to eat more vegetables, eat less sugar, exercise more, and get better sleep etc. But while we know it intellectually, it’s often difficult to put it into practice and make it a part of our daily habits. In your opinion what are the 3 main blockages that prevent us from taking the information that we all know, and integrating it into our lives?

3 blockages — ease of buying fast foods.

Daily stress and being tired when you come home and then have to cook or think about food. Laziness.

Not enough relaxing.

Can you please share your “5 Non-Intuitive Lifestyle Tweaks That Will Dramatically Improve One’s Wellbeing”? (Please share a story or an example for each, and feel free to share ideas for mental, emotional and physical health.)

Live in the present. If you live in the past, that becomes your future.

Exercise routinely. I hear people say that as they age they can’t move as quickly. That is not true. Age is a state of consciousness.

Eat vegetarian as much as possible avoiding dairy as it causes inflammation. I often disagreed with being Vegan but then I tried it and my body felt amazingly light and I had more energy.

Meditate daily. If you are closed then the Universe cannot help you.

Love yourself. The disease cannot survive in love.

As an expert, this might be obvious to you, but I think it would be instructive to articulate this for the public. Aside from weight loss, what are 3 benefits of daily exercise? Can you explain?

Exercise stops us from being infirm. It is so important to live out our lives happy, and fully functional, and exercise helps us do that by keeping our muscles active and our minds clear. Active bodies have more energy which heals the energy around our bodies, stagnant bodies have low energy. We can all feel that.

For someone who is looking to add exercise to their daily routine, which 3 exercises would you recommend that are absolutely critical?

Pilates which is great for all muscles. Hand weights and a weight routine. Yoga or Barre

In my experience, many people begin an exercise regimen but stop because they get too sore afterwards. What ideas would you recommend to someone who plays sports or does heavy exercise to shorten the recovery time, and to prevent short term or long-term injury?

Keeping up with exercise (at least three times a week), will eliminate soreness and keep your muscles engaged. Start with a moderate routine and work your way up, and try to monitor what you’re eating so you don’t have unnecessary inflammation. Know your body and don’t push it, overdoing it is never good.

There are so many different diets today. Can you share what kind of diet you follow? Which diet do you recommend to most of your clients?

My diet is primarily Vegan with no dairy, with a little fish from time to time. Every now and then I’ll sneak some good cheese, but for the most part, I stick to Vegan.

Is there a particular book that made a significant impact on you? Can you share a story?

Return to Love by Marianne Williamson and the Surrender Experiment by Michael Singer. Both of these authors give a wonderful insight into life.

You are a person of enormous influence. If you could start a movement that would bring the most amount of good to the most amount of people, what would that be? You never know what your idea can trigger. 🙂

Teaching people to get rid of fear, guilt, sadness, and negativity. You are the master of your thoughts. If emotion does not have a name, it cannot exist. I want to teach people to live in the present and visualize the future.

Can you please give us your favorite “Life Lesson Quote”? Do you have a story about how that was relevant in your life?

“Age is a state of consciousness.” Every year on your birthday, you are asked your age. When a loved one passes, people ask the age. To me, I felt that age is a number given that incorrectly defines us. We are not a number. A number does not define you. Celebrate your birthday, but forget the number. It means nothing.

We are very blessed that some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this if we tag them 🙂

Dr. Joe Dispenza. His work with the mind and energy around us is amazing.

What is the best way our readers can follow you on social media?
