If you’re ever experiencing a bout of self-doubt, or feeling a little challenged in the self-love department, there might not be a faster fix than a dose of Dolly Parton. As referenced in The New York Times, one fan summed up her appreciation like this: “I’ll tell you why I love her… Dolly is everything I never dared to be. Sure, she’s outrageous looking. But just once, didn’t you ever want to do something outlandish — without worrying what everyone will say?”

Whether your goal is to stop worrying what people will think or you want to own your value a bit more, this short clip will give you just the boost you need. Here are our favorite nuggets of wisdom from the video, straight from Dolly herself:

1. Choose a mantra, and repeat it.

Parton starts simple: “You are enough,” she tells the camera. “And anyone who tells you otherwise isn’t worth your time.” This is just the kind of empowering mantra that can be transformative. Research tells us that when we repeat a mantra, it causes a shift in brain activity. So rather than “faking it,” you’re actually working toward an internal remodeling of your thoughts and beliefs.

2. Write down something you love about yourself.

In the video, Parton encourages you to “make a list of the things you love about yourself. They can be big or small. Like, ‘I cook a mean chicken pot pie.’ Or, ‘I’m a great mom,’” she suggests. “And if you tell yourself enough nice things, eventually you’ll believe them too.” We know that journaling can be a powerful way to connect with yourself — and while you’re at it, save a few lines to reflect on what makes you great.

3. Silence your inner critic.

Our inner critic can play on our doubts and insecurities, holding us back from taking the next steps — in our relationships, in our careers, etc. Well, fighting that inner voice starts with reminding yourself that you are worthy. “Go in with confidence,” Dolly urges. “You got in the door because you deserve to be there. Don’t forget that.”
