Castell Son Claret
Once a historic fortified home, this luxurious resort in the Mallorca countryside is the perfect getaway for city slickers looking for some R&R and a whole lot of pampering.
Castell Son Claret is located in the gorgeous Tramuntana mountains, and may only be 40 minutes from the airport, but feels like a world away.
The guests are a mix of mature European couples, or young couples with under 2’s or romantic lovers. This is not a place for young kids – as there is just not enough to keep them entertained. Its more about laying poolside, eating at the Michelin Star restaurant, Zaranda, treating yourself to a spa treatment or a spot of tennis on the gorgeous tennis court surrounded by immaculate gardens.
Entering the ground is all about the drama. The palm-lined long driveway opens up to a incredible front garden with the majestic castell in the background. This is what fairy tales are made of.
We were warmly welcomed into the lobby and while our luggage was ushered to our room, we were escorted to the gorgeous outdoor terrace where we were promptly brought 2 fresh lemon squashes with a hint of lavender – all from the estates gardens.
The terrace is used throughout the day for a drink under the sun, breakfast in the morning and dinner on a warm summer’s night. The view of the pool is just visible from this point and is calling for you to come closer to rest and enjoy.
The Pool & Spa
After our refreshing welcome drink, we took a quick peek at the main pool and ‘oo and ahhhed’ at the stunning view of the gardens and countryside beyond. We would have to make a quick change and head back here for a quick dip asap.
The outdoor pool a short walk from the dinning terrace is gorgeous and perfect for a cool dip (or some more vigorous laps) on a hot summers day. There are umbrellas for those needing shade – and it does get extremely hot, so best to try to get the early afternoon or very later afternoon sun to avoid any kind of overdoing it.
If the weather is a little cool or cloudy, head to the indoor spa, Bellesa de Claret Luxury Spa has an indoor pool, a modern relaxation area, hammam and sauna. The Spa also offers some great treatments, massage, facials, hairdressing and hands & feet relaxation.
The interiors are classic and easy on the eye. The design isn’t about being the most modern, and that’s the point. The exposed wood timber beam ceiling is typical Spanish style and a wonderful reminder of where you are. The views are also out of a fairytale. Every morning open your shutters to incredible, classic Spanish architecture, bougainvillea’s, and the birds chirping from the magical gardens.
The Villas are the key to staying here, though the standard room is still spacious. Select a Villa with a private pool for ultimate luxury or one with a large terrace for a spectacular view.
There is no doubt a lot of travelers will come to Castell Son Claret for the 2 star Micheline restaurant, Zaranda, and happen to stay the night (or 2). Whether you are dining at Zaranda or their more casual (but still exceptional) Olivera, you will not be disappointed. In fact, if they have oysters on the menu, make sure to order a dozen – they were unbelievable, and I’ve had my fair share of oysters around the world.
Breakfast is a mix of your classic favourites and delicious Spanish staples – Spanish omelette and baked eggs in tomatoes
During the day if you have an adventurous spirit, forget the gym and head outdoors. There are some of the world best hiking and bike trails, a game of tennis if your keen or just meander through the lush and carefully manicured gardens.
A great experience is to hire a car and drive around the island, take your time, take a GPS and leave the plan behind.
If you have been planning a romantic getaway and wanting somewhere where you can really tune-out, get pampered, and be surrounded by luxury indoors and out, this is the place.
It’s finally the right time to stop and smell the roses.
