Baking soda is one of the kitchen staples that can work great on your foul smelling and clogged drains. The common clogs that you find in the kitchen drains are from oil, grease and fat. As for the bathroom drains, scum and hair form the clogs. Thus, baking soda or what is also called as sodium bicarbonate is the solution to clogged drains. It is a naturally occurring mineral compound that is slightly alkaline powder which can dissolve organic materials as well as mineral deposits.
How often should you clean your drain?
It is best advised to clean your drains weekly. All you need to do is to flush some boiling water with grease fighting dish soap and you are done! For more difficult to clean clogs, drain it with baking soda as soon as you see the water is draining slowly. You can also use this as a regular maintenance process to keep your drains clean. For instance, if you keep an open box of baking soda in your refrigerator, it absorbs the odour, in the same way, you can use baking soda to flush the kitchen or bathroom drain.
What all will you need to unblock a drain?
- Boiling water
- Baking soda
How to do it?
Pour a full jug or pot of boiling water down the drain.
Put in about half a bowl of baking soda. Let it be there for a few minutes in the drain.
After 1-2 minutes, pour a mixture of 1 cup boiling water and 1 cup vinegar on top of the baking soda.
Cover the drain plug just after pouring in the vinegar and water mix. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Putting a wet cloth over the opening will seal the baking soda in as well as the vinegar, making them extra potent. Let them sit in the drain for 5 to 10 minutes. If you don’t leave them for this time, they will not unblock the drain.
After 10 minutes, flush a pot of boiling hot water again. During the 5-10 minutes waiting time when the vinegar and baking soda were sitting in your drain, you can boil water. Remove the cloth from the drain opening and slowly pour the hot water down the drain. This will wash away the baking soda, vinegar as well as the remaining traces of clog.
Using the same ingredients i.e. vinegar and baking soda, if your bathroom drain is clogged, mix some baking soda and vinegar. Pour it down the drain and put a stopper on the drain opening. After an hour, fill the bathtub with water and remove the stopper. The pressure of water will be sufficient to dislodge the clog and blockage that must have been loosened by vinegar and baking soda. You can even try plunging or drain snake along with the weight of the water.
How and why this formula works?
The hot water and baking soda formula will loosen up all the grimy sludge which may be there at the bottom of the drain and thus the explosive reaction with vinegar will jolt it loose. And then the final hot water flushing will make all the bad things go out.

In case you see that the vinegar and baking soda formula doesn’t work for your blocked drain, you can even use the baking soda and salt method.
